Applaud Precedent-Setting Animal Welfare Laws

Dog by AlbertHerring

Target: Mayor Georges Bourelle

Goal: Applaud Beaconsfield, Quebec for passing progressive animal welfare laws, and receiving the Compassionate City Award from PETA.

Beaconsfield, Quebec has recently received the Passionate City Award from PETA for their new bylaws to protect animal welfare. The city council noted that what laws they did have were severely outdated. So, when writing new laws, they looked at what could best benefit animals. They created legislation that would not only outlaw puppy and kitten mills, but also ban animal sales be it from home or by pet shops. This encourages people to adopt, or they will be forced to look outside of Beaconsfield to buy animals.

These laws will inconvenience many potential breeders. However, they also solve the big problem other cities have with actually stamping out puppy mills. When the mills are made illegal, perpetrators just start breeding indiscriminately in their homes. No one reports it because personal breeding isn’t illegal, and doesn’t even require licensing. Many ill-reputed breeders are even registered with the ASPCA or AKC, because there are no checks and balances in place to keep tabs on them.

Beaconsfield has eliminated this problem. Anyone found selling animals within the municipality will be subject to the law. It is a move that will hopefully inspire their neighbors and others to move toward progressive animal welfare laws. They are definitely deserving of the Compassionate City Award. Sign and applaud them for this spectacular move toward improving animal safety.

Dear Mayor Bourelle,

Congratulations on Beaconsfield’s acknowledgement by PETA with the Compassionate City Award. While animal welfare is increasingly more important to people, it is often hard to knock out loopholes when creating laws to protect them. In most cases, puppy mill owners are taking advantage of breeding laws by selling from their homes. Hopefully, with the new bylaws instated by Beaconsfield, this will not be a problem for them. While people may still try, the fact that all sales are illegal will allow them to be prosecuted. Your decision gives hope that more such laws will come into existence in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to update, and even improve, animal welfare laws in your area. Thank you for putting so much consideration into the safety and future well-being of the animals in Beaconsfield.

    C’est une bonne nouvelle OK.
Mais ils feront quoi pour la protections des petits blanchons sur la banquise ?
Le Quebec est au Canada, alors cette protection devrait s’étendre également aux phoques.

  3. Really really good. Everybody should follow!
