Send Tormented Circus Elephant to Accredited Sanctuary

circus elephant by Sebastiaan ter Burg

Target: John Ringling North II, owner of Kelly Miller Circus

Goal: Release the circus’s only elephant and send her to a sanctuary.

A 34-year-old African elephant named Anna Louise is being forced to entertain patrons of the Kelly Miller Circus, a group that has previously come under fire for mistreating animals. A circus is not a suitable environment for an elephant to live in; her physical and psychological well-being are in extreme jeopardy.

According to One Green Planet, Anna Louise was captured from Zimbabwe, stolen away from her family in 1988, and has been moved around from zoo to zoo ever since then. Since being acquired by the Kelly Miller Circus, she has been forced to dress up in costume and dance on a stage with various other animals. She is beaten with bull hooks and spends much of her time in isolation. In the wild, female elephants roam together in herds, but Anna Louise has no freedom to roam and has no elephant companions.

Circuses are not healthy homes for elephants. Nicole O’Shea, a member of Animal Defenders International who has protested Kelly Miller Circus, claims that elephants are frequently trained using violence, and circus animals often display behaviors that indicate that they are not coping well with their environment.

Sign the petition below to demand that Kelly Miller Circus release Anna Louise and send her to an accredited sanctuary.

Dear Mr. Ringling North,

I urge you to release Anna Louise, a 34-year-old African elephant, from the possession of your circus, and send her to an elephant sanctuary. Anna Louise lives a sad and lonely life with Kelly Miller Circus. She is forced to perform tricks, spends much of her time in isolation, has no space to roam, and has no elephant companions.

I am sure you are aware that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus are retiring all of its performance elephants this year after decades of immense pressure from animal rights groups to stop the torture of circus elephants. Kelly Miller Circus has a chance to do the same.

Wild animals are not ours to own as property, and they are not ours to be used for entertainment. Anna Louise may never be able to be reunited with her family in Africa, but she has the chance to live a much happier life in an elephant sanctuary. She could have more space to roam and will be able to socialize with other elephants, something that is crucial to elephant well-being. I demand that you follow Ringling Bros.’ lead and retire Anna Louise to an accredited sanctuary.
