Target: French Environment Minister, Ségolène Royal
Goal: Shut down the marine park where countless trapped animals died after management failed to adequately protect them from a severe flood.
Europe’s largest marine park, Marineland, has reopened six months after being devastated by a severe flood that killed sharks, sea lions and turtles among others, despite its resident animals clearly being unsafe there. A 19-year-old orca named Valentin also succumbed to internal injuries a week after the incident, despite the Marineland park, in Antibes, France, initially claiming that all orcas had survived and were healthy.
Animals died a slow and painful death as the tanks they were trapped in filled with mud from the flood. Power cuts which weren’t fixed on time meant that pumps could not function to provide clean water for the tanks. Clearly, Marineland was not prepared to properly care for its animals and should not have been allowed to reopen. A number of NGOs have submitted complaints of animal cruelty against the park for the poor treatment of its animals, mainly its orcas.
Marine parks are no place for wild animals, who are clearly not safe in captivity. Sign this petition demanding that the Antibes Marineland is shut down for good.
Dear Ms. Royal,
The Marineland in Antibes has been allowed to reopen despite the fact that its poor management led to countless animals dying after the severe floods that hit the South of France last year. Sharks, sea lions and turtles died slow and agonizing deaths as the tanks they were trapped in were not cleaned out of the mud that flooded into the park. Despite the park claiming that all its orcas had survived and were healthy, a 19-year-old orca named Valentin succumbed to internal injuries following the floods.
Clearly this park is unable to properly care for its resident animals. Moreover, wild animals do not belong in captivity. We demand that the Marineland in Antibes is forced to shut its doors for good, and that its remaining animals are released or sent to suitable sanctuaries.
