Demand Safer Animal Transportation Laws

Target: Texas Speaker of the House, Joe Straus

Goal: Outlaw dangerous methods of transporting animals such as in open flatbed trucks down the highway.

Photos of a dog tied to a flatbed truck on the highway in the Houston area have recently gone viral. The dog has no protection and is held to the truck only with a leash attached to a neck collar. According to the KHOU news website, the truck was reportedly traveling at 65 miles per hour. The District Attorney’s office has said that this extremely dangerous method of transport is actually legal in Texas.

According to Texas law, transporting an animal in a dangerous manner does not become a crime until the animal gets hurt. This means that there is currently no legal recourse to prevent the driver of this truck from putting his dog in this situation again. The dog could easily have been injured or killed if the truck had to stop abruptly, took a turn too fast, veered off the road, or collided with another vehicle. This is not to mention that transporting an animal in this way is cruel.

Laws that forbid this method of animal transportation are necessary in order to prevent the physical and emotional suffering of animals. Sign the petition below to encourage the Texas legislature to pass a bill which will prevent this awful situation from happening again.

Dear Speaker Straus,

Recent photos of a dog tied to a flatbed truck on the highway in the Houston area have raised concerns about the lack of legal protection for animals in Texas. In Texas it is completely legal for this driver to put his dog’s life at risk by tying him to a flatbed truck and driving down the highway at 65 miles per hour.

This animal was not only scared, but also in extreme danger of injury or death. Currently there is no law which would allow the driver of this truck to be prosecuted to prevent him from putting this dog’s life at risk again.

I am urging you to introduce a new piece of legislation that would make it a crime to endanger an animal’s life in this way. The Texas legislature must pass a bill which makes it illegal to transport an animal in a manner that puts the animal’s welfare at risk, including putting animals in or on the open beds of trucks and strapping them to the roofs of cars.

Do not let another citizen of Texas endanger the life of an animal. Please take action to ensure that all animals are kept safe while being transported.

  6. Just saying…..they also transport kids this way….the older pickup trucks don’t have the “cab seating” that gives extra inside seats.
