Shut Down Abusive Roadside Zoo

Target: Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture for the U.S. Department of Agriculture

Goal: Revoke roadside zoo’s license after numerous animal welfare violations.

A roadside zoo in Michigan has allegedly committed a multitude of horrific animal welfare crimes that should warrant its closure, yet its license was still automatically renewed at the beginning of the year. Summer Wind Farms Sanctuary has been investigated by PETA in the past and received a formal complaint from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in January for almost 90 willful violations of the Animal Welfare Act between 2012 and 2015. Now, a recent inspection by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has resulted in even more citations for violating federal animal welfare laws.

According to the inspection report, a tiger cub only 25 weeks old was being kept locked up in a tiny cage in the basement of a house on the zoo’s property and denied sufficient veterinary care. Animals that young need almost constant care and attention as well as space to exercise and explore, and this kind of neglect can be highly detrimental to a cub’s health and well-being. The inspection also exposed that Summer Wind was not being kept to hygienic standards, and there were numerous instances of health violations such as a meat cooler filled with rotten meat and a food preparation area covered with blood.

Very similar findings were reported during the Department of Agriculture’s previous investigation last year, yet the roadside zoo remained open and clearly did not make an effort to reform. The formal complaint was the first step in a disciplinary process that could hopefully result in license suspension or revocation, but in the meantime the zoo is still being allowed to operate despite its evident cruelty toward animals.

The Department of Agriculture cannot keep allowing licenses to be automatically renewed for facilities with continual Animal Welfare Act violations like Summer Wind. Sign the petition below to urge the Department of Agriculture to rethink its licensing process and demand that Summer Wind Farm Sanctuary is finally shut down.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Vilsack,

The roadside zoo Summer Wind Farm Sanctuary has received numerous citations for violating the Animal Welfare Act, yet remains open because its license was automatically renewed at the beginning of the year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s recent inspection revealed even more violations, including a 25-week-old tiger cub being kept in a tiny cage in the basement of a house on Summer Wind’s property and denied adequate veterinary care. There were also many health violations including a meat cooler filled with decaying meat and a food preparation area covered with blood.

The USDA’s formal complaint in January was an important step toward beginning a disciplinary process that will hopefully result in the zoo’s license being either suspended or revoked, but more needs to be done to stop this inhumane treatment of animals. Licenses should not be renewed automatically to facilities with continual Animal Welfare Act violations, as it enables these companies to stay open and continue abusing their animals.

I am urging you to rethink your license renewal process and make a greater effort to monitor animal welfare violations. Please take action to revoke Summer Wind Farm Sanctuary’s license, and end its cruel and unethical treatment of animals.

Sincerely,

  1. Why do we even have agencies like this if the people running them refuse to act? You don’t get to Always sit on your butt and do nothing and still expect a paycheck.! Do your damn job or step down. I’ve yet to hear of a roadside zoo that is run the way it should be. Shut them all down and make your job even easier! Every agency in America needs new people to run them as most are like the GOP party, do nothings or make things worse!
