Target: New Britain District Attorney, Brian Preleski
Goal: Demand thorough investigation of man accused of slamming dog into wall.
A couple faces animal cruelty charges after the alleged abuse of a pit bull they cared for together. The dog was owned by Angela Caffrey, who stated that her boyfriend, Quamane Cherry, was the dog’s primary caregiver. As a result of Cherry’s reported abuse, which included throwing the dog against a wall, the dog suffered fractures in the face and femur. She also began to walk with a limp.
After the investigation began, Caffrey turned the dog, now re-named Hope, over to animal control. Since then, the pit bull has undergone surgery to remove bone fragments from her hip. She also required daily therapy at a foster home and some rehabilitation. Not surprisingly, Cherry is charged with maliciously wounding an animal. He was offered a plea deal of two and a half years of prison time and two and a half years of special parole, but decided to go to trial instead. Caffrey also chose to go to trial, but it is unclear what charges have been laid against her.
Animal rights activists and protestors have shown up to every appearance the couple has made in court. They hope that the couple will be made to pay for Hope’s expensive vet bills, and that Cherry will spend at least two a half years in jail for his actions. To make matters worse, protestors allege that Cherry has taunted them by blowing kisses and smirking in court, showing no remorse for his actions.
Help ensure the accused receive adequate punishment at the end of their trial by adding your name to the petition. Weak sentences not only send a bad message about how animal cruelty is viewed, but also open other animals up to being the victim of a repeat offense.
Dear District Attorney Preleski,
A couple was arrested on animal cruelty charges after law enforcement received an anonymous tip concerning the welfare of their dog. The person who made the complaint stated that they could hear the dog crying during the abuse and that it walked as though its leg had been broken.
After investigations began the owner, Angela Caffrey, turned the dog over to animal control. The pit bull received immediate care, which included surgery to remove bone fragments from her hip and daily rehabilitation. She also reportedly suffered from fractures to the face and other parts of her body.
Though Caffrey owned the dog, the primary caregiver was her boyfriend, Quamane Cherry. Reports allege that it was him who abused the dog, and not the girlfriend, though she did not intervene. Cherry was offered a plea deal of two and a half years probation and two and a half years of prison time but decided to go to trial instead. Caffrey chose to do the same, though it is not clear what her charges are.
Animal rights activists have staged peaceful protests at every court appearance since, and continue to fight for the rights of animals like Caffrey’s who cannot speak for themselves. I urge you to join your forces with these animal rights groups to ensure a harsh sentence if the accused are found guilty. This sends a strong message to help deter others from committing acts of animal cruelty in New Britain.
