SAVE THE BEARS
REMEMBER the Florida widely publicized Black Bear hunt held during the last weekend of October, 2015?
That was the first promoted hunt since bears were removed from the endangered species list.
RESPECTFUL HUNTING FOR FOOD IS ONE THING. BUT, THIS WAS A BLOODBATH.
Dead bear tallies reported at the hunting checkpoints proved the hunt was a “failure” of the goals set by Florida’s Fish & Wildlife Commission, aka the FWC. It appears to have been a sale for “animal trophies” which financially benefited the FWC “Corporation” as well as others…most kills were not even preserved on ice by the hunters, as per typical hunters’ standards for food preservation in the field.
*What can we do to prevent next year’s FWC sanctioned (75% publicly unpopular) Black Bear hunt? Sign the attached PETITION asking Lake County Commissioners for a proposed ordinance on the next ballot, addressing bear-proof trashcans to be voted on in our next election. These locked trashcans have proven to reduce human-to-bear interactions by 95% in a 12-month pilot study in Volusia County.
These “interactions” were the main reason cited by the FWC for the culling of our iconic, generally non-aggressive, mainly herbivorous, Florida Black Bear population.
This county ordinance hearing would set a big precident for other counties in Florida.
Help us show the FWC that we will not accept their corruption!
