Tell Whole Foods to Commit to Better Chicken Welfare

Target: John Mackey, co-CEO of Whole Foods Market

Goal: Urge Whole Foods to improve chicken welfare now, rather than waiting until 2024.

Whole Foods Market recently announced its commitment to supporting better living conditions for chickens and slower-growing breeds by 2024. Considering how much chickens raised for eggs and meat currently suffer, eight years is far too long to wait to marginally improve their welfare.

Fast-growing chicken breeds currently represent 98 percent of chicken meat in North America. Chickens genetically selected to grow bigger faster suffer disastrous consequences, such as broken bones, lameness, immune system and heart conditions, to name a few. They are packed into tiny wire cages, unable to display natural behaviors and given no access to the outdoors or even natural light.

The billions of chickens who suffer in this way urgently need improvements to their welfare, and 2024 is far too late to implement them. Moreover, Whole Foods carries a number of food items containing tasty meat alternatives, such as mock chicken, and should commit to replacing all products obtained from suffering animals with these healthier and cruelty-free alternatives. Sign this petition demanding that Whole Foods commit to vastly improving the welfare of chickens now.

Dear Mr. Mackey,

While Whole Foods is taking a step in the right direction by committing to improve chicken welfare, eight years is far too long to wait for the billions of animals who currently suffer to bring your consumers eggs and meat. You are certainly aware of the conditions currently faced by broiler and layer chickens–packed into tiny cages, given no access to enrichment or even natural light. This is no life for a sentient being.

Please commit to dramatically improving chicken welfare now. Moreover, your stores already carry a number of mock chicken products, I therefore urge you to replace products obtained from suffering animals with these healthier and cruelty-free alternatives.

  1. Why does it always take so long for enterprises, farms, companies etc. to introduce better conditions for humans and animals? Why 2024? Why not NOW?

  2. Lisa Allred Lisa Zarafonetis says:

    Signed & Shared.

  3. Maria Mahyorova says:

They don’t want our money until 2024? OK. Boycott until 2024. Just imagine they have to change supplier due to any other reason – say, if it was found poisoned. How long would it take? DAYS! A couple of days. They just think we’re idiots.

  4. Again “animal welfare” is still for animal exploitation.
At the end it’s still slaughterhouse.
Why they do not simply let down?!
