Don’t Eject Tortoises to Make Room for U.S. Marines

Target: General Robert B. Neller, Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps

Goal: Relocate Marine Corps training ground rather than displace endangered tortoises.

The U.S. Marine Corps plans to move more than 1,100 endangered desert tortoises from their homes to make room for a Marine training ground. Conservationists and experts indicate these tortoises are basically homebodies, staying within a few square feet their entire 90-year lifespan. These same experts state that moving these tortoises would not only confuse them, but also leave them open to diseases and death from predators they’re not used to.

It is necessary for Marines to train in a variety of environmental conditions, but since they are far more adaptable than endangered tortoises, the human soldiers should relocate the training camp, not the tortoises. Demand the Marine Corps reconsider this plan and locate a more appropriate training site.

Dear General Neller,

The Marine Corps’ plan to relocate more than one thousand giant tortoises to make way for a training site is a poor choice for the ecological health of the planet. The desert tortoise is endangered and removing it from its home area will only serve to open it up to further deadly situations such as disease and new predators.

We demand the Marine Corps locate a different training area and leave the tortoises in their home area.

  1. Of course training for war and killing to make this world an even more violent place must take priority over peaceful Mother Nature!!

Our servicemen and women around the world are the ones that rescue dogs and cats when they are being mistreated by the locals. That’s what Americans do. Don’t make these young Marines mistreat these tortoises by moving them.
