Ban Tax Credit for Dog Racing Park

Dog Racing by saris0000

Target: Senate President, Andy Biggs

Goal: Stop tax break given to Tucson Greyhound Park for the past 20 years.

A “hardship tax credit” is being given to the Tucson Greyhound Park and other dog racing parks like it, though animal rights advocates are lobbying for an end to this practice. The government first granted the tax credit in 1994 when casino gambling threatened dog and horse track businesses. In addition to this, a tax exemption and special deductions were also allowed to help the businesses recover. Today they are thriving at the expense of innocent animals and still granted tax breaks.

The bill animal rights advocates put forward has passed unanimously in the Arizona House of Representatives. It is now pending in the Senate. If successful it will prevent animal racing tracks from receiving any more tax credits.

Unfortunately, this does not free the hundreds of dogs enduring captivity and other forms of animal abuse in the name of “sport.” It also does not do much to account for the millions the race track has stashed away over the years from the deductions and breaks. Nevertheless it is a start and a step in the right direction.

Obviously more needs to be done to put an end to dog racing in Arizona and the rest of the world. Until then, sign this petition to ensure tax dollars are no longer spent on supporting animal abuse.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Biggs,

I write this letter to urge you to throw your weight behind the passing of a bill aimed at cutting government tax breaks granted to the Tucson Greyhound Park and other animal racing establishments. The race track first began receiving these and other breaks from the government in an effort to help them stay afloat while casinos boomed back in the mid 1990s. The tax breaks continue today in spite of thriving business.

Animal racing has undergone intense scrutiny from animal rights advocates and the public at large due to cruelty to animals. Dogs and horses used for racing are often kept in cages, and thousands die every year around the country from neglect and other forms of abuse.

I understand that animal rights is not always at the top of every politician’s list, so instead consider the millions of tax dollars wasted on keeping this treacherous business in place. This money could have been better spent on education, housing, or developing infrastructure.

Help put an end to not just the senseless spending of taxpayers’ dollars, but also a system bent on abusing animals for public amusement and personal profit.

Sincerely,
