Goal: Demand closure of pet store reportedly selling sick and mistreated animals.

A pet store is selling animals sourced from cruel and profit-focused puppy mills, according to animal rights activists. Newly opened Dreamy Puppy in Spotsylvania County, Virginia has seen a wave of protests by local animal lovers over irresponsible sourcing practices. They say that the dogs inside the shop are sick and are not receiving proper care from store staff.

Puppy mills are commercial facilities in which dogs are bred intensively without regard to their health or well-being. These inhumane operations often see dogs kept in squalid conditions and too-small wire cages without access to proper veterinary care. Female dogs spend most of their adult lives pregnant, and have their pups ripped away from them too soon so that they can be impregnated again. These mother dogs suffer chronic nutrient deficiencies and weak bones, and often develop harmful repetitive behaviors consistent with cruel confinement.

According to visitors, dogs at Dreamy Puppy have displayed signs of poor health, including lethargy and skin conditions. One activist claimed that none of the dogs had access to water in their display cages, and reported seeing a staff member kicking a puppy as he tried to clean up urine from its enclosure. Another activist expressed concern that the dogs were too young to be sold, a strong indicator of irresponsible breeding practices.

Pet stores profiting from the sale of ill-treated and sick animals are all too common in the United States. There are an estimated 4,000 puppy mills in the country that produce over 500,000 puppies per year. In order to stop these operations, law enforcement must crack down on the stores that support them. Sign the petition below do demand that Dreamy Puppy is shut down and that the owners and operators are prosecuted.

Dear President Pacelle,

Sick and mistreated puppies are allegedly being sold at a pet store in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Local activists claim that the animals at Dreamy Puppy are suffering from skin conditions and are being taken away from their mothers too early, a classic sign of puppy mill cruelty.

In order to protect half a million dogs annually from neglect and mistreatment at the hands of profit-focused breeders, it is important that any store selling animals from puppy mills is immediately closed. We, the undersigned, demand that the store is shut down and that any persons found to be supporting puppy mills are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
