Stop Zoo from Allowing Public to Touch Hippos

Hippo Jon Connell

Target: John Lewis, Director of Los Angeles Zoo

Goal: End the zoo program where the public is allowed to touch hippos, which puts the public and the animals at risk.

The Los Angeles Zoo has released a new program called Hippo Encounter. During this experience, the public is allowed to touch a mother and baby hippo.

Hippopotamuses are dangerous animals and have killed more people in Africa than any other mammal. Mother hippopotamuses are especially aggressive because they are very protective of their young.

This mother hippopotamus should be able to raise her baby in peace without constant fear when strangers approach her and her baby. This program is clearly all about profit and not for the well-being of the animals. Sign this petition and demand that the zoo’s director end this program.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Lewis,

Your zoo recently released a program called Hippo Encounter. During this experience, the public is allowed to touch hippopotamuses, including a mother and her baby.

Hippopotamuses are responsible for more deaths in Africa than any other mammal. The public should not be getting this close to these dangerous animals. In addition, mother hippopotamuses are especially aggressive because they are protective of their young. This mother hippopotamus should not have to live in constant fear as strangers approach her and her baby.

It is clear this program is for profit and not for the well-being of the animals. To ensure the integrity of your zoo, please end this program immediately. It puts the public and the animals at risk.

Sincerely,

  1. Leave the hippos alone. All wild animals should be left in their own environment.

  2. Phyllis Stinson says:

My jaw dropped when I saw it was the los angles zoo. Congratulations is appropriate to the Zoo, reading this made me think of some road side attraction where that would be happening with their animals. Something people just can’t belive is still allowed to be in existence & not illegal in all 50 states

  3. Patricia Dumais says:

Look — don’t touch — leave them alone!

  4. Heather Brophy says:

John, YOU IGNORANT FOOL AND WHY DO WE PAY YOU? YOU ARE AN EMBARRASSMENT AND SHOULD STOP THIS IMMEDIATELY OR RESIGN NOW!

  5. Jaclyn Bisanz says:

this is extremely dangerous & just stupid on behalf of the people in charge. clearly they don’t know anything about the behavior of the animals in their care. Hippos are extremely aggressive animals.

  6. Let the animal’s lone. There should be a barrier up & have no crossing the line or out you go.
