Target: Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, India

Goal: Punish men who allegedly strangled and bludgeoned 50 stray dogs before burying them in a mass grave.

Over 50 stray dogs were allegedly killed by a five-man mob, say animal rights activists in India. The five men were allegedly hired by management at the Velankanni Church, a popular tourist destination in Tamil Nadu, India, to catch and kill all stray dogs within a one kilometer radius. The dogs were clubbed to death or hanged with nylon ropes before being buried in a mass grave.

Stray dogs are very common in India and have been labeled as pests by both residents and tourists. The hungry and unhealthy dogs roam in packs and have been known to lash out at humans and their pets. Each year, approximately 20,000 human deaths occur due to rabies infections from stray dog bites. This number accounts for over one-third of rabies cases globally.

Though the dogs pose a threat to the health of humans, this is no excuse to kill them in such a brutal manner. The Indian government has introduced an aggressive spay and neuter program that includes the setup of 500 sterilization and vaccination centers across Tamil Nadu. Police in some cities have rescued animals off the streets and put them in training programs to become K-9 officers, while terminally ill dogs are euthanized in a more humane manner.

In order to protect the health of both dogs and humans, the Indian government should look to further decrease dog populations with humane measures, such as increased sanitation to remove the large amounts of trash that these stray dogs feed on. Sign the petition below to demand that that those responsible for the brutal killings of over 50 stray dogs are punished, and that the government work harder to prevent these acts in the future.

Dear Minister Javadekar,

Over 50 stray dogs were allegedly killed in the vicinity of Tamil Nadu’s Velankanni Church by a mob of 5 men. The dogs were strangled and bludgeoned to death before being thrown into a mass grave. This is only one of many recent attacks against the stray dog population.

In order to prevent further attacks against these stray dogs, the government must punish their attackers and do more to prevent canine aggression against humans. We, the undersigned, demand that the men are punished to the full extent of the law if found guilty, and that improved sanitation standards are implemented in order to further curb stray dog populations.

  1. Kill them

  2. Ghandis GREAT teachings are only HEARD BY US. His fellow countrymen have reverted back to pack mentality and Barbaric times. Gods words are forgotten & EE NEED to REMIND THESE FILTH who mutilate, murder & disrespect a HOLY TRADITION OF PEACE & NONVIOLENCE!

  3. Although they shouldn’t have acted that way, you should put yourself in their situation. if you would be afraid to walk on the street or even get home, what would you do? I’m talking about a permanent situation, and i know what it means. they didn’t act right, they shouldn’t have gotten revenge, but unless you’re in the same situation, where terror accumulated over the years, you can’t just write a comment from your comfy couch and act as if you’re just so entitled to judge them.

    • Wendy Waltenberg says:

Sorry Ramona. WE are entitled to judge them and judge them harshly we will.
Disgusting that a church which is supposed to show compassion and love for all living creatures, authorised this.
Shame on all in this “church” for seeking a better way to deal with the situation.
But I guess animal rights don’t feature much higher than human rights in that country.

    • Kali Maa Shakti De says:

You dumbass, if you’re referencing terror that Tamil people had to deal with, you mean the Tamils of Sri Lanka. Not Tamil Nadu in India.
This is a huge, western style, CATHOLIC church. You have no idea what you’re talking about and obviously have never been to India.

  4. Wendy Waltenberg says:

This must be a bad joke !!!
A church whose people are supposed to show compassion and love for all living creatures.

  5. michelle taylor says:

These bastard dog killers must be exterminated!Die arseholes and a slow painful slow death at that you filthbags!

  6. michelle taylor says:

These bastard dog murderers must have the death penalty implemented.I am ready, willing and able to help enact this procedure!OH YES!!!!

  7. Lynne danieli says:

Backward bastards. They make me sick! And we give millions in aid this this shit hole of a country??? I would love to hang them by the neck with a piece of rope. Something needs to be done about this now!!!

  8. It is not the church’s place to go around brutally killing the strays. Besides, the Indian government is already making positive changes to improve and curb the lives of the stray population. The cruel and unmerciful act the management of Velankanni Church has undertaken to destroy precious lives is a total disgrace and unacceptable to all religious teachings and they must be severely punished for undermining the authority as well.
