Let Sick Girl Keep Her Therapy Dog

Pit Bull

Target: Sam O’Leary, President of the Lakewood City Council

Goal: Stop authorities from taking away the dog that comforts a 4-year-old during cystic fibrosis treatments.

A city is threatening to take away the dog that comforts a 4-year-old girl during scary treatment for cystic fibrosis because the dog might be more than half pit bull and the city has an outdated ban on the breed. Aleeah has to endure daily treatments for her illness, one which involves shaking her chest violently for 15 minutes. This could be very upsetting for such a young child, but her dog Scrappy is always there to comfort her.

Many cities still have bans on all pit bulls because they have a reputation for being violent due to the brutal dog fighting community that exploits these normally gentle animals. However, pit bulls that are raised with love are no more dangerous than any other breed. It would be tragic if an incredibly sick little girl lost her best friend and comfort just because of false stereotypes about pit bulls.

There is no scientific basis for banning dogs who are over 50 percent pit bull, but if a DNA test finds that Scrappy is, the city is within its right to take him away. This law needs to be overturned so that nobody needs to fear having their beloved animal companion taken away. Sign our petition to demand that the Lakewood, Ohio city council let Aleeah keep her dog and instead do away with this cruel, unnecessary ban.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. O’Leary,

A 4-year-old girl is currently waiting for a DNA test on her best friend to see if he’ll be taken away from her. The dog may be more than half pit bull, and this breed is banned in your city. To make things worse, the dog, Scrappy, is her only comfort during the violent and upsetting treatments she has to endure every day for her cystic fibrosis.

Bans on pit bulls are outdated and unnecessary. Pit bulls are not naturally violent or more aggressive than any other breed–they simply have a bad reputation because they are often used for dog fighting. However, if raised right, these dogs can be incredibly gentle and loving friends.

The girl, Aleeah, and her family moved to your city in order to have better access to treatment for her very serious condition. Taking her dog away due to a law that shouldn’t be in place at all would be cruel and heartless and could easily traumatize a little girl who already has so many difficulties due to her cystic fibrosis.

Instead of letting Scrappy be taken away, I urge you to act to rescind this ban. Do the right thing for Aleeah and all the other kids out there who want to hang onto their best friends.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

There is absolutely NO reason to take this beloved therapy dog away from a sick child. Pit bulls are not born mean and aggressive but trained to be that way by human beings!DO NOT PUNISH THE BREED OF DOGS for human beings’ STUPIDITY!!!!!!!

  3. Kae Blecha, OTR says:

And what lucky person gets to explain to a 4-year-old that her dog is being taken away from her because of its genetics? CF is also genetic.

    • Yes, as Neville said below, “STUNNING” point! Can these neanderthals even THINK as well as a dog can?!! Maybe now we need to check HUMANS’ genes, to rapidly cull out the ones who aren’t able to add enough “intellect” to our own gene pool.

  4. Neville Bruce says:

It’s a child’s therapy dog, for goodness’ sake.

    Stunning point by Kae Blecha!

  5. MORE f-in assholes!

  6. COME ON AUTHORITIES EACH AND EVERY DOG NO MATTER THE BREED MUST BE EVALUATED ON ITS OWN MERITS. STOP THIS INSANITY AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT AND LET THIS POOR SICK CHILD HAVE HER BELOVED PET BACK NOW!!! THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS WATCHING …………….YOU!
