Stop Ivory Sales Through Yahoo

Target: SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son

Goal: Stop allowing advertisements for ivory products to be sold on through Yahoo Japan.

Yahoo Japan is one of the few remaining online platforms that condones ivory sales. Yahoo’s U.S. facility claims they have no final say in Yahoo Japan’s operations and doesn’t condone these actions. These denunciations have proven ineffective in changing Yahoo Japan’s mind. With the rest of the world and other major international platforms closing their doors to ivory, continuing to allow sales has only proven more lucrative for them.

An estimated 12 tons of ivory have been sold from Japan. If this is not alarming enough, research suggests that their ivory sales have heavily contributed to the 60 percent decrease in the African elephant population between 2009 and 2014. That is roughly 35,000 elephants killed every year for their tusks.

These numbers are outrageous, and Yahoo Japan has shown no interest in actually banning these sales, as they are incredibly profitable. Despite their reluctance, attempts must still be made in hopes of someone seeing reason and putting the conservation of elephants above money. Sign our petition to demand Yahoo stops all sales of ivory through any division of its company.


Dear Masayoshi Son,

The ivory trade is becoming more taboo with the rise in animal conservation interest. Yahoo Japan is one of the only major companies that has yet to ban ivory sales through online platforms despite petitioning. Still, hope cannot be abandoned that the stockholders of Yahoo Japan will place a higher value on the conservation of life than the sale of trinkets. The ivory industry is a lucrative one, especially with Japan being one of the last outlets to purchase ivory, but the question is–is it worth it?

Eventually, poaching will drive elephants to extinction as it recently has the black rhino. Ivory will no longer be available, while previously carved items will remain in circulation, those are likely to run through private auction houses. Is it worth sacrificing the reputation of a business in an ever more environmentally concerned world to make money now? Is it worth allowing yet another endangered species to be lost forever to fulfill materialism?

Please consider, as one of the largest shareholders in Yahoo Japan, urging them to ban the sale of ivory. Help put a dent in the poaching industry and save elephants from extinction.
