Justice for Rare and Endangered Tortoise Allegedly Stolen from Zoo

Target: Andrew Colvin, Commissioner of Australian Federal Police

Goal: Launch a full-scale investigation to locate critically endangered tortoise allegedly stolen from zoo, and bring its kidnappers to justice if found guilty.

A critically endangered tortoise has been reportedly stolen from Perth Zoo in Western Australia, raising fears that it will be sold into the illegal pet trade. The animal, a radiated tortoise, belongs to an extremely rare species that is in grave danger of extinction. Habitat destruction and poaching have reduced the radiated tortoise’s numbers dramatically, and the species is listed as critically endangered.

It is not known why the tortoise has gone missing, though the animal is highly prized for its rarity and unusual shell pattern. It is at high risk for sale on the illegal pet market. Even worse however, many have expressed fears that the tortoise will be killed for its shell. Zoo officials are concerned about the animal’s current conditions, as radiated tortoises require a specialized diet and highly regulated temperature.

The zoo is conducting its own investigation with assistance from local police but with no current leads. A wider investigation is needed, as the alleged kidnappers could attempt to smuggle the animal into another region. Demand that the federal police immediately launch a full-scale investigation to locate the tortoise, return the endangered animal to safety, and bring the alleged kidnappers to justice.

Dear Mr. Colvin,

A highly rare tortoise is missing from Perth Zoo, and many believe that it was kidnapped for sale in the illegal pet trade. This animal belongs to a species that is in grave danger of extinction due to poaching and habitat loss. The species is currently listed as critically endangered.

Many fear that the animal was stolen to be sold on the black market, as its rarity and unusual shell make it a highly prized illegal pet. Fears also abound that the animal will be killed for its shell. Regardless, the animal is in grave danger, as it requires a highly specialized diet and regulated temperatures. We, the undersigned, demand that a full scale investigation take place into this matter. Bring the radiated tortoise home to the Perth Zoo, and its alleged kidnappers to justice.
