Demand Tough Stance Against Unlicensed and Neglectful Animal Shelter

Target: Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin

Goal: Seek maximum legal penalties against operators of sanctuary where 600 sick and injured animals were kept.

The owners of an unlicensed animal shelter have been arrested after authorities uncovered more than 600 sick and neglected animals on their acreage, according to reports. Around 300 dogs, 250 cats, and various other animals including horses, birds, and pigs were recovered from the farm by police officers and 130 American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) staff. According to ASPCA vice president of field investigations Tim Rickey, this is one of the largest-scale animal cruelty investigations ever seen by the organization.

After receiving several complaints about the conditions of The Haven-Friends for Life animal shelter and the animals in its care, authorities obtained a warrant to search the property. Once inside, they reportedly found animals living in filthy, run-down sheds, some without access to water. Many of the animals were sick or injuredsome with open wounds or skin conditions and others displaying signs of malnourishment.

This shelter has been running for over a decade and has repeatedly failed to obtain licensing due to its poor conditions. On several occasions, operators allegedly did not implement animal welfare recommendations laid out by the Department of Agriculture, which included reducing the number of animals at the sanctuary, providing fresh water for animals, and providing proper care for sick and injured animals.

The owners’ repeated refusal to provide proper living conditions for their animals shows a complete lack of consideration for their well-being. In order to bring justice to the hundreds of animals neglected in their care, it is important that the operators of the sanctuary are punished to the full extent of the law. Sign the petition below to demand that investigators seek out the maximum possible penalties against these cruel and neglectful offenders.

Dear Sheriff Peterkin,

Over 600 dogs, cats, horses, birds, and pigs were recently removed from The Haven-Friends for Life animal shelter. The animals were allegedly being kept in beaten up sheds without consistent access to fresh water. Many of them suffered from open wounds, skin conditions, and malnutrition.

Particularly considering the owners’ past failure to comply with Department of Agriculture demands to improve living conditions and veterinary care for the animals, it is clear that this is a case of ongoing and willful neglect. We, the undersigned, ask that you seek out the harshest possible punishments for these cruel offenders.

  2. Since when has ANY AG Dept. EVER cared about the “welfare” of animals to do ANYTHING meaningful for them??? It’s a total conflict of interest right WITHIN their very jobs! What a complete farce! And this municipality?…why wasn’t it that these rotten people were heavily fined LONG ago as well, for operating without a license???! Just ANOTHER low-life State that should be purged of most of its hick residents!
