Target: Anderson Cooper
Goal: Send a thank you to CNN host Anderson Cooper for sponsoring the purchase bulletproof vests for a Virginia police department’s K9 unit.
In the avalanche of horror stories and abuse cases involving animal welfare, it’s wonderful to hear some good news. After the recent tragedy involving a K9 unit named Krijger in Norfolk, Virginia, CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper donated a canine safety vest to every K9 member of the police force.
While it is standard procedure for human officers to be equipped with a ballistics vest, it is often out of the realm of funding for the same to be purchased for K9 units. The vests themselves cost around $1,400 – $2,200. This is far more expensive than human ballistic vests. The vests are made of Kevlar and help protect K9 officers from stabs, blunt force assaults with a weapon or punches, bullets and explosives.
Cooper has definitely set a heartening example, but he is not the only one helping K9 officers and police stations obtain these ballistic vests. Websites such as Project Paws Alive take donations to help purchase these vests for officers in need. There are also organizations and funds out there people can donate to. Even if we can’t donate thousands of dollars to outfit a whole unit, small donations can help. Applaud Anderson Cooper for this live-saving donation.
Dear Anderson Cooper,
Last week, in response to the Virginia K9 Officer Krijger being shot, Anderson Cooper donated ballistic vests to all K9 officers in the Norfolk, Virginia police department. These officers are often sent into the field without protection due to the steep cost of these vests. Mr. Cooper went above and beyond to ensure the K9 officers of Virginia have a better chance of returning home.
In light of the recent surge of K9 bullet wounds, these vests will be a huge relief for the department. Please give your thanks to Mr. Cooper for ensuring the increased safety of these officers.
