Stop the Illegal Hunting and Killing of Deer

Target: Attorney General State of Mississippi, Jim Hood

Goal: Prosecute people who illegally hunt and kill deer that are fleeing terrible floods.

Mississippi residents are illegally hunting and killing deer as the animals flee rising flood waters. Law enforcement in local counties report an increasing number of cases regarding these activities and continue to monitor the situation. As a result, some hunters are serving time in jail for shooting deer during a suspended hunting season.

Due to one of the worst winter floods Mississippi has experienced in years, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks suspended the hunting season with promises to re-open it after the waters subsided. Despite the ethical concerns of needlessly taking a life in the name of sport, even the most experienced hunter will attest to the importance of abiding by these laws to protect wildlife and allow survival and re-growth for the following season.

Yet local law enforcement continues to receive reports of suspected hunting in the off season and have arrested E.B. Metcalfe and Donald Hensley in relation to this crime. Metcalfe originally denied killing any deer, but confessed to the accusations after police found three dead deer on his property.

In Hensley’s case, offers were forced to give chase. Police then found four dead deer and the head of a buck in his vehicle. Hensley also confessed to killing the four deer, though he insisted that the buck’s head had come from someone else.

Sign this petition to help ensure that the deer survive the terrible winter flood by ensuring the prosecution of E.B. Metcalfe, Donald Hensley, and others who kill deer during the off season. Prosecuting these criminals to the fullest extent of the law sets an example to other illegal hunters and discourages them from killing more deer in the off-season.

Dear Attorney General Hood,

In spite of the courageous efforts of local law enforcement to curb the problem, many residents of your state continue to flout hunting laws by killing deer in spite of a closed season. Not only have residents taken part in off-season hunting, but they also exceeded the daily bag limit, resisted arrest, and committed obstruction of justice.

So far, two known suspects have been arrested in relation to these crimes since the winter flood led to a closing of the hunting season. These suspects include E.B. Metcalfe and Donald Hensley. In both cases, bodies of illegally killed deer were found on the property of the accused persons, and both admitted to the accusations of illegal hunting.

As law enforcement is already doing all it can to prevent more instances like this from happening, I urge you to act by ensuring E.B. Metcalfe, Donald Hensley, and all other related offenders receive full punishment for their actions. Please assist these brave officers with curbing illegal hunting in the area by making an example of those who flout your state laws.

Disgraceful that people will take advantage of the terrible plights of these animals who are so stressed and fleeing for their lives, and use their hardship and terror as an opportunity to destroy them for their own pleasure or gain. I am ashamed nearly every day that I am human when I see horrors and heartless behavior like this every day.

  2. I too think that this is disgraceful. Why do people have to take advantage of a dire situation for animals as well as people?! Don’t people have any EMPATHY for other living beings just trying to SURVIVE?! What is wrong with people – I will never understand the “kill” mentality of these morons. It really is sickening.

  3. William Eaves says:

Why do f***ing yanks have to shoot everything all the time.

  4. Cynthia Mattera says:

Shame on you people who are killing helpless animals, trying to survive the flood waters. Truly disgusting!!!!Hope you serve jail time for your crime!!!
