Target: Cathy Stepp, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

Goal: Praise the capture and reprimand of a poacher who killed a beloved deer.

A beloved deer was killed when a poacher shot it with a crossbow in a public park. The hunter fled the scene immediately after the incident but was tracked down by police. Join us in praising the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for reprimanding an illegal poacher.

The community of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin mourns the death of a well-known deer. Bowtie was named for the bow tie-shaped white spot on his neck. He inhabited the trails of Wauwatosa Park and was an enjoyable sight for the local joggers and hikers. On December 13th, Bowtie was shot with a crossbow and died almost instantly. The person responsible fled the scene after a brief interaction with a bystander. Thanks to the diligent work of the Wauwatosa police department, the poacher was reprimanded.

Hunting is illegal in county-owned parks—Bowtie should never have been in danger. Thanks to the work of the Wisconsin DNR, the poacher was charged with multiple violations and fined $1,000. His crossbow was confiscated by the DNR and his hunting license was revoked. Join us in praising the Wisconsin DNR for its dedication to this case and their efforts to bring justice to a beloved animal.

Dear Secretary Stepp,

The Wauwatosa community adored Bowtie. The local deer, named for the bow tie-shaped mark on his neck, brought joy to the local hikers and joggers on the Oak Leaf Trail. On December 13th, Bowtie was shot with a crossbow and died almost instantly. Your rapid response and unrelenting dedication to justice resulted in the identification and capture of the poacher.

It is well known that it is illegal to hunt in county-owned parks. So, when Jim Bagley entered the park with his crossbow, he should have understood that he was breaking the law. Despite this, he targeted and killed Bowtie. When accused by a local bystander, Bagley fled the scene. Thanks to the efforts of Wauwatosa police, Bagley was found and reprimanded.

The community is mourning the loss of their most beloved deer. However, your decision to charge Bagley with multiple violations and fine him $1,000 goes a long way in setting a future precedent. In addition, by confiscating his crossbow and revoking his hunting license you have protected other local animals from harm. We would like to thank you for understanding the importance of this case and avidly seeking justice for this innocent deer.
