Target: California Governor Jerry Brown
Goal: Stop clear-cutting habitats of Sierra Nevada red fox.
The threatened Sierra Nevada red fox is at risk of becoming endangered. It has been illegal to hunt and trap since 1974 but destruction of its natural habitat by logging has led to a continued decline of their population. The Sierra Nevada red fox is a solitary nocturnal creature that rarely travels in groups and avoids human populations. Their nature has already put them at risk and the loss of their habitat has increased the likelihood they will move to endangered status.
To aid the red fox in maintaining and improving its population the clear-cutting of its habitats must stop. Clear- cutting is the uniform removal of trees in a targeted region. The effects of this practice are devastating to the local ecosystem, especially to the red fox as they make their homes near the tree line of the mountains. If clear-cutting can be stopped these foxes will have a much better chance of survival and repopulation. It will also allow more access for scientists to collect data and learn more about the fox.
Please sign the below petition to urge California Governor Jerry Brown to end destructive clear-cutting and allow these delicate creatures the room to thrive.
Dear Governor Brown,
The beautifully elusive Sierra Nevada red fox is just one of many species currently being threatened by deforestation. Clear-cutting California forests has put the Sierra Nevada red fox in great danger of becoming extinct, which would not only rob the earth of one of its many intriguing creatures but would negatively impact the local ecosystem.
Forests do not exist solely to serve the human population. They have many complex and important tasks to keep our environment operating. Forests are Earth’s filters for air and water. They combat soil erosion and reduce the risk of damaging wildfires. The California Department of Resources estimates the Sierra Nevadas provide California with 60% of its water supply. The removal of these woods has and will continue to dramatically reduce the supply of fresh water.
I urge you to consider halting the practice of clear-cutting in California’s forests. This will not only aid the Sierra Nevada red fox and other wildlife but residents of California. Please take into consideration the state of our environment and how small positive changes can affect us all.
