Save Beavers From Slow, Painful Death in Traps

Target: Thomas Kelaher, Mayor of Toms River, New Jersey.

Goal: Encourage the use of non-lethal methods to repel beavers and prevent unnecessary death.

A beaver colony is facing an unfair death sentence. In a misguided effort to prevent flooding, the Toms River township has approved the placement of underwater traps throughout Lake Placid to kill the beavers. Demand that the Toms River Township consider non-lethal solutions to save these innocent animals.

Beaver dams are one of several causes of flooding along Lake Placid. In an attempt to stop the flooding, the township has devised a plan to trap and kill the beavers. The underwater traps snap the beavers’ spinal cords on contact. If this does not kill the beavers, drowning will.

Alternative solutions do exist. A trapezoidal fence specially designed to repel beavers could solve the problem. The fence has proven to be 98 percent effective and would not harm the beavers. Also, replacing the outdated drains and adding beaver-proof covers would prevent further dam construction. Finally, relocation would take the beavers away from the area and free the drains. Despite these options, the township continues to utilize the traps.

The Humane Society of the United States has taken an interest in saving the beavers. They asked the township to delay the traps for one week so that they could meet and discuss alternative options. The township denied this request. Join the Humane Society in rallying against this inhumane plan. With alternative methods available, killing should be the last option. Sign below and demand a humane alternative to extermination.

Dear Mayor Kelaher,

The beavers of Lake Placid have been sentenced to death in a desperate attempt to stop flooding. However, alternative options do exist. The beavers do not need to die for the flooding to end. We demand that you explore these options and leave extermination as a last resort.

While the beavers are partly responsible for the flooding, there are other factors to consider. The current drains are massively outdated. Replacing the drains and adding beaver-proof covers would increase drainage and prevent further dam construction.

In addition, trapezoidal fences drive beavers away and prevent them from entering drainage pipes. These fences have been proven to be 98 percent effective in situations as urgent as that in Lake Placid. Finally, relocation would remove the beavers from the lake and free the drainage pipes.

As long as alternative options exist, the beavers should not have to die. We demand that you consider all alternatives before sentencing the beavers to an unnecessary death.

This needs to stop! These beavers are vital to our ecosystems and help stop climate change. There are ways to mitigate beaver damage and live with these amazing creatures in harmony and mutual respect.
