Target: David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
Goal: Stop allowing hunters to use dogs to chase foxes into holes for the purpose of mutilating them.
Over 1,400 dogs were allegedly used to engage in illegal fights with foxes during underground hunting events. We need to take action to better ensure innocent animals will not continue to suffer.
The League Against Cruel Sports claims that tracking collars are placed on the dog to find the fox. The dog is then apparently released into the foxhole or badger den to catch an animal that has escaped the hunter. The organization states that after the fox is found, a person known as a terrier man digs in the specific location to catch the animal. The league further claims that dog owners take pleasure in allowing their dogs to fight with the foxes and even brag about the number of injuries the dogs receive.
Although underground hunting is illegal in England and Wales and the images of fighting dogs and foxes are being investigated, this problem will not likely get better unless underground hunting is banned altogether. Banning the sport would likely include not allowing people to promote or encourage this type of hunting through published materials.
Support banning underground hunting and materials that may encourage others to engage in it. If we continue to allow this type of hunting to take place, many more innocent dogs and foxes will soon be either severely injured or dead.
Dear Prime Minister Cameron,
Police are investigating over 1,400 dog owners that have posted pictures of their dogs fighting foxes during underground hunts on various social media sites. It is important that underground hunting be officially banned so that the lives of many innocent animals will be spared.
According to the League Against Cruel Sports, dogs are sent down foxholes and badger dens wearing tracking collars to chase foxes that have escaped. They further explain that once it is thought the dog has found the fox, a person known as a terrier man digs at the location in order to find and hunt the animal. The organization also alleges that the people who take part in this type of hunting encourage fighting between dogs and foxes and even consider scars on dogs to be signs of victory.
While it is good news that underground hunting is illegal and that people who post such horrific images will likely be investigated by authorities, these horrific fights are not going to stop any time soon unless underground hunting and the promotion of it is banned altogether. For these reasons, I encourage you to support banning this unnecessary and cruel sport. If nothing is done, many more innocent animals will continue to greatly suffer and die.
