Stop Government-Sponsored Deer Slaughter

Target: Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor

Goal: Prevent killing of 100 deer in upcoming cull.

The city of Ann Arbor in Michigan recently approved a plan to cull the local deer population through lethal measures. In the plan, 100 deer are to be gunned down in public parks, some of which are less than 450 feet from local homes. Past experience has shown that this method is ineffective, and to cruelly slaughter deer when other more humane means exist is simply cruel.

The council’s decision came after a tense and divisive town meeting. Dozens spoke in opposition to the measure, which passed with a vote of 10-1. The ruling ignores the advice of the Humane Society of United States, who proposed the use of more effective non-lethal methods to control the deer population. In order to pass the ruling, officials also had to vote to lift an ordinance that restricts the firing of guns in parks. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, also known as USDA-APHIS, will carry out the cull at a cost of $35,000.

Officials claim that deer are ravaging vegetation in Ann Arbor, and their growing population has led to the destruction of local plant life. Many residents and animal rights advocates, however, have argued that landscaping is not as important as the lives of these deer. “I continue to believe the cull is too divisive an issue to support,” said Mayor Christopher Taylor. “It comes, of course, from the killing of the deer. And also, too, from the sanctioned discharge of firearms in our parks. Each of these actions, I think, is inconsistent with the ethos, with the core values, of so many in the community.”

The plan has not yet gone into effect, meaning there is still time to save these precious creatures. Opposition from both the mayor’s office and the public suggests that there is a still a chance to reverse this ruling, but time is running out. Dear Mayor Taylor,

The recent decision to allow the slaughter of 100 deer in your town is unacceptable and must be reversed. Past experience has proven that these measures are far less effective than more humane alternatives. The ruling ignores the advice of the Humane Society of United States and requires the firing of guns extremely close to residents’ homes, a practice that is both extremely disruptive and potentially dangerous.

I thank you for your support in voting against this measure. Though the plan was approved, it is not too late to prevent the fatal outcome. Please do not allow the killing to proceed as scheduled. I urge you to substitute effective non-lethal population control methods instead.
