Protect Endangered Lions from Poisoning

Target: Felix Kiptarus Koskei, Head of The State Department of Agriculture in Kenya.

Goal: Enforce stricter boundaries for herdsmen who poison African lions.

Two famous African lions died after they consumed poison set out by Maasai herdsmen. Simindei Naururi and Kulangash Toposat reportedly soaked a cow carcass with poison after the lions killed three of their cows. Two of those lions died soon after eating the carcass and one remains missing. Urge the Kenyan government to strictly enforce land boundaries with the Maasai herdsmen in order to prevent future poisonings.

Bibi, a 17-year-old lioness, was found foaming at the mouth and panting after consuming the poisoned cowhide. Hyenas killed another lion after he was weakened from the poison. The last lion, Sienna, is missing. Veterinarians are treating eight other lions as well as surrounding wildlife that could have also been exposed to the poison.

This isn’t the first poisoning to occur at the Maasai Mara Game reserve. Though it is illegal, herdsmen allow their cattle to graze on the reserve. The lions target the cattle as prey. In an angry response, the herdsmen set out poison in order to kill the lions and protect their herds. Due to the endangered status of the African lion, this is illegal. Naururi and Toposat have been charged but they are just one example of a larger problem.

Sign below to demand that Kenyan authorities enforce harsher property boundaries between the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and the Maasai cattle ranches. By targeting this problem at the source, we could end the killing and save this endangered lion.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Koskei,

Local herdsmen have killed two members of The Marsh Pride, famous for its appearance on BBC’s Big Cat Diary. Simindei Naururi and Kulangash Toposat reportedly soaked a cow carcass with poison after the lions killed three of their cows. They have been charged; however, this is not the first poisoning on the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. We demand that you enforce stricter boundaries between the reserve and the Maasai herdsmen in order to prevent any future poisonings.

After dark, the Maasai herdsmen illegally sneak their cattle onto the reserve’s property to graze. The lions see the cattle as prey and attack them resulting in a never-ending slaughter. In 2010, the Maasai herdsmen poisoned more than a dozen lions at the reserve as retribution for their dead cattle. Since then, the killing hasn’t stopped.

We demand that you strictly enforce the property boundaries between the reserve and the Maasai herdsmen in hopes that it will end this vicious cycle.

Sincerely,

  2. FELIX KIPTARUS KOSKEY, Head of The State Department of Agriculture, KENYA and all others in this Dept. who can do something about this sad situation, but CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING: Are you people aware that two famous AFRICAN LIONS DIED after they consumed POISON set out by MAASAI HERDSMEN ?????????? What are you going to do about this???????????? You can ENFORCE harsher property boundaries between the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and the Maasai cattle ranches. THANKS TO THIS PETITION, the WHOLE WORLD is WATCHING YOUR NEXT MOVE. Make it a positive one. Protect Endangered Lions from Poisoning.

  3. Please stop poisoning the lions.

  4. Retaliating against lions, blaming lions for being lions, is irrational, merciless and shameful — due to your poison, these magnificent animals suffered greatly — think of a better WAY to protect your animals — clearly, poisoning lions will NOT remedy your problem of losing cattle.
