Target: Carol-Lynn Parente, Executive Producer of Sesame Street
Goal: End the promotion of SeaWorld on Sesame Street.
Unfortunately, many segments and characters on the show Sesame Street appear at SeaWorld. Sesame Street has been around for ages and has always been a favorite for children. By having SeaWorld appear on this popular children’s show, it teaches kids that SeaWorld is a happy place for animals. However, that is very far from the truth.
Due to the popularity of the documentary Blackfish, many people are now aware of the horrors that happen behind the scenes at SeaWorld. Whales and dolphins are confined to small, concrete tanks which feel like bathtubs to them. They suffer from harsh sunburns and collapsed dorsal fins. In the wild, orcas will swim up to 100 miles and live up to 40 years old. At SeaWorld, the average age for orcas is nine. The stressful conditions of their living situation cause many other mental and physical health problems.
Sign this petition and tell the executive producer of Sesame Street to end the promotion of SeaWorld on their show. We should not be teaching children that it is okay to take animals away from their families and natural homes to confine them in tanks for the entertainment of humans.
Dear Ms. Parente,
Sesame Street has been a favorite among children for many years. Many parents like the show as well for the ethical and powerful messages it sends to children. However, many of the characters and segments of the show appear at SeaWorld. This is very unfortunate and disheartening due to the ill treatment the animals of SeaWorld endure daily.
At SeaWorld, whales and dolphins are confined to small, barren, concrete tanks that feel like bathtubs to them. They suffer physically and mentally due to their neglectful and stressful living conditions. Many whales and dolphins endure painful sunburns and collapsed dorsal fins. In addition, orcas in the wild will swim up to 100 miles a day and live to 40 years old. At SeaWorld, orcas are unable to swim that far due to their confinement and the average lifespan is nine years. It is clear that SeaWorld is not a happy or healthy place for these animals.
I am asking you to stop your promotion of SeaWorld on Sesame Street. Children are very impressionable and the appearances at SeaWorld teach them that it is okay to take animals away from their families and homes to confine them in tanks for entertainment.
