Demand Sanctuary for Endangered Chimpanzee

Target: Sam Haynes Jr., owner of Dixie Landin’ Amusement Park

Goal: Give a mistreated chimpanzee a better life in a sanctuary.

Candy, a captive chimpanzee, has been allowed to smoke cigarettes while in the care of the Dixie Landin’ Amusement Park. She also drinks soda and lives in a cage that is inadequate for her needs. Urge the Haynes family to give Candy a better life in a chimpanzee sanctuary.

Candy lives a lonely life in isolation from other chimps. Depressed and lonely, she rocks back and forth in a seated position to entertain herself. Her cage is small, lacks entertainment, and is on display to the public at all times. Candy’s diet does not meet the requirements for a healthy chimpanzee. Candy is given soda to drink instead of water. This puts her at risk for obesity, diabetes, and liver disease. Candy has been taught how to smoke. Visitors to the park are encouraged to throw lit cigarettes into her cage. Smoking affects chimps in much the same way it does humans. Candy could suffer respiratory ailments and develop cancer due to this behavior. As a chimp, she cannot make an informed decision regarding her diet and smoking habits.

The Endangered Species Act protects Candy from mistreatment. Specifically, it states that Candy must be provided with an environment that supports physical and mental health and matches that of a chimpanzee in the wild. The Animal Defense Fund has filed a lawsuit against the Dixie Landin’ Amusement Park claiming that these conditions are not being met. Sign below to urge the Haynes family to move Candy to a chimpanzee sanctuary where she can thrive.

Dear Mr. Haynes,

It is inexcusable to allow an endangered species into your amusement park without providing its most basic needs. Candy, your chimpanzee, is not having her basic needs met. Chimps require adequate space, stimulation, and diet in order to thrive. Instead, she is given soda instead of water. The public is encouraged to throw lit cigarettes into her cage so that she can smoke them. She is kept in isolation from other chimps and appears bored and depressed.

Candy deserves better than this. If you truly care for her, than you will give her a better life. A chimpanzee sanctuary can provide her with the stimulation of other chimps, a healthy diet, and a beautiful habitat. We demand that you send Candy to a chimpanzee sanctuary so that she can live the rest of her days healthy and happy.
