Target: Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia
Goal: Hold companies responsible for murdering orangutans by setting wildfires.
Orangutans are dying in large quantities because of fires that are thought to have been purposely set in order to clear land for palm oil fields. We need to take action to try and ensure the companies that caused this mess are held responsible for helping to restore this animals’ habitat.
Infant orangutans are unable to breathe as a result of the very thick smoke. The animals are developing upper respiratory tract infections, and many orangutans in the wild have already died. The fires are even hurting the animals that are living in nearby sanctuaries.
Orangutans are also quickly losing their home to the fires because they have been burning since September. Unfortunately, these fires have proven too difficult to put out since the area’s soil, known as peat soil, emits high amounts of carbon dioxide.
Demand the companies responsible for starting these fires be charged heavy fines in order to pay for the destruction and that they further be required to plant new trees and to improve the animals’ natural habitat in any way that wildlife experts see fit. If we don’t hold these companies responsible, they will continue to get away with destroying this animals’ habitat and eventually killing off this beautiful species.
Dear President Widodo,
It is alleged that a few companies started fires in Indonesia in order to clear land for palm oil fields. Since a great amount of destruction has been caused by the fires, these companies need to be held responsible for helping to fix the problem.
Baby orangutans are barely hanging onto life and many adults now have upper respiratory tract infections because of the heavy smoke. Even orangutans living in local sanctuaries have been adversely affected.
While there are many animal rescue organizations doing their best to help these animals, they only have limited resources. In order to restore this species’ home sufficiently, much more money will be needed than what these rescue agencies are able to provide.
I therefore urge you to hold the companies who started these fires responsible for the damage by charging them with heavy fines and by requiring them to participate in helping rescue workers to do things such as planting trees after the fires are under control. It is essential these companies be held responsible for their actions in order to ensure that the surviving orangutans will have a better chance to thrive.
