End Alleged Abuse Against Pigs and Dogs by Laboratory Breeder

Target: Paul Wolseley, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service

Goal: Shut down laboratory breeding facility accused of mistreating its animals.

A federal investigation into an animal breeder selling pigs and dogs to laboratories allegedly found rampant injuries to the animals in the facility. At Oak Hill Genetics in Ewing, Illinois, investigators reportedly found pigs and dogs with pus-filled wounds, skin irritations, swollen joints, and fluid buildup in their ears. Baby pigs, in particular, were described as being found with open sores and swollen necks and legs. Following the investigation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued an official warning to the breeding company, ordering it to stop violating the Animal Welfare Act.

Oak Hill Genetics breeds and sells animals to several labs, including those of the University of Chicago, the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital. Not only are these sentient animals sold to laboratories where they will be the subjects of cruel and often unnecessary experiments, they spend their lives prior to being sold confined in bleak barren warehouses and crammed into metal crates too small for them to even turn around in. In this particular case, they are allegedly mistreated and left to suffer from painful ailments without proper veterinary care.

Considering that more humane and suitable alternatives to testing products on animals now exist, sentient animals should not be made to suffer unnecessarily. On top of profiting from selling animals to labs where they will suffer this unnecessary abuse, this particular facility has proven itself to be incapable of caring for these animals’ wellbeing even before they are sold. Clearly Oak Hill Genetics puts financial profit above animal welfare and should not be allowed to continue breeding animals. Sign this petition and urge the U.S. Department of Agriculture to go further than simply issuing a warning and shut this facility down for good.

Dear Mr. Woseley,

The USDA recently issued a warning to Oak Hill Genetics for violating the Animal Welfare Act. A federal investigation reportedly revealed that many of the animals were suffering from serious ailments and injuries. Pigs —including piglets — were found to have swollen necks, ears, legs and joints, large pus filled wounds, and fluid buildup around their ears while a dog also presented a large pus-filled wound and irritated skin. The investigation led to the USDA taking a rare step: issuing a warning to Oak Hill Genetics citing violations to the Animal Welfare Act.

The Illinois-based facility breeds and sells dogs to several university laboratories and hospitals for cruel and unnecessary experiments to be performed on them. In an age where humane alternatives are widely available and often far more effective, it is a disgrace that performing tests on sentient animals is still allowed. Furthermore, this particular breeding facility has proven itself to be incapable of properly caring for the animals it sells. I urge you to go a step further than simply issuing a warning to Oak Hill Genetics and shut down their breeding facility for good.

USDA?????? Another Government Agency, paid with our tax dollars. Can I withhold my portion please???? I don’t appreciate contributing to this. Food Safety and Inspection is a division of the USDA. You also have a STATE department of AG…..they license the puppy mills, then don’t inspect them…it’s all about the money.

  2. Please stop murdering

The USDA has proved itself to be completely useless in the fight for animals. No animal should be abused like this. We know better, now we should do better

  5. This is just typical, mad scientific experimentation which is both cruel and of little use to transfer to human predictive results, whatever the outcome its likely humans will be the real guinea pigs for this disgusting abuse

  6. shut this laboratory breeder down now. must get justice for these great animals now.
