Stop Mistreatment of Teacup Pigs

Target: Kevin Shea, Administrator of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service

Goal: Stop the mistreatment of pigs by banning the sale of teacup pigs as family pets.

Pigs are not suited to live within the limitations of the average American household. They can become ill and even hostile when their needs are not met. This leads to the pigs being abandoned or turned over to shelters when the family can no longer handle them. These animals deserve better. Urge the USDA to ban the sale of teacup pigs as family pets.

Teacup pigs are bred to meet the aesthetic expectations of buyers. Breeders inbreed their pigs in an attempt to achieve smaller-sized piglets. This results in birth defects such as squished snouts, which cause breathing problems for the animal. Breeders also recommend that pigs be underfed or given poor quality food to keep their weight down.

Even then, size cannot be guaranteed. Potbellied pigs do not reach full adulthood until the age of five and can grow up to 300 pounds. This can cause a problem for families living in small homes. Pigs do not adapt well to confined spaces. They require room to move and also benefit from the company of other pigs. Without the proper stimulation and exercise they can become angry and depressed. Pigs are also territorial and will defend their space if challenged.

For these reasons, many pigs end up being surrendered to shelters, farms, and even left on the side of the road to die when they become too much for the buyer to handle. By signing below, you will encourage the USDA to restrict sales of pigs as pets and give this animal a chance at a better life.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Shea,

Within the last two years, there have been a growing number of teacup pigs abandoned or killed throughout the country. This can be attributed to the recent popularity of teacup pigs as household pets.

Pigs can reach up to 300 pounds in adulthood. They require a spacious outdoor environment to grow and thrive. The average American home is not equipped to handle a pig at full size and temperament. Breeders resort to unhealthy tactics such as inbreeding and underfeeding to produce pigs that fit into the “teacup pig” image. This is unhealthy for the animal and can cause physical and emotional problems. It also misinforms the buyer. This leads to pigs being surrendered or abandoned due to their size, temperament, and emotional needs.

Please take action and prohibit the sale of pigs for domestic purposes. Pigs are intelligent animals. They don’t deserve to be starved in order to fit the public’s unrealistic expectations.

Sincerely,

  1. Pigs are such gentle, sociable, affectionate and intelligent animals–but they must have their needs met and be treated well.

Most are not. In fact, most are treated horribly.
Factory farm pigs are tortured, sadistically.

Now, with the trend towards breeding so-called “teacup” pig, the situation is just getting worse for the species. People are lied to–the pigs will get big, and they need room and lots of attention. Breeders either underfeed them or show them a young pig and falsely claim its a mother.

Don’t let this happen to more animals. Breeders are out-of-control, doing anything to make money, no matter how cruel they are to animals or how deceiving they are to the public.

There is enough horrific abuse of pigs on factory farms, in lab experiments, etc. These animals make wonderful pets, if someone has the space, the knowledge and the commitment to care for them–that rarely exists.

Don’t we have enough animal cruelty in this country?! Aren’t the shelters overwhelmed enough with abandoned, abused and stray animals?!

Don’t let this continue. There has to be more control of the irresponsible breeding of a “trendy” animal. Stop the further suffering and death of more innocent animals! Stop this breeding of tea-cup pigs!

  2. IT SICKENS ME TO MY STOMACH, IT MAKES MY HEART ACHE FOR ALL THE ANIMALS IN THIS WORLD THAT ARE TREATED WITH OUT ANY THOUGHT FOR THE ACTUAL ANIMAL, WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT, MONEY, WHAT PROUD PEOPLE THEY MUST BE, I REALLY DO WISH THEM ALL THE BAD AND HATEFUL THINGS TO HAPPEN TO THEM IN THEIR LIFE TIME.

  3. We need stronger laws and more oversight with regards to animals/pets!
