End Cruel Animal Abuse During Annual Festival

Bull Joao Silva

Target: Muzamani Charles MC Nwaila, Director General, Department of Traditional Affairs, South Africa

Goal: End the barbaric Zulu Ritual in which teenagers kill a bull with their bare hands.

Every year on the first Saturday of December, the First Fruits Festival is held in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. During this festival, people bring their first harvest for the Zulu Monarch. The king will eat the harvest, bless the land, and pray to god. He also invites about 40 teenagers, as young as 14, to kill a bull. This marks the coming of age of Zulu warriors.

In order to kill the bull, the 40 young men have to use their bare hands. They will kick and punch the bull as well as gouge the bull’s eyes and shove whatever they can down the bull’s throat. The ritual is as barbaric as it sounds. The bull will endure countless acts of torture until he finally dies.

Bulls are intelligent, curious, and sentient beings. They are social and form friendships. No living being should be subjected to this torture. A battle of 40 against one is no sign of a warrior. Sign this petition and demand that South African officials end this cruel ritual.

Dear Professor Nwaila,

On the first Saturday of December every year, the First Fruits Festival is held in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Most of the traditions are fun for all. However, the scene becomes barbaric when the king invites teenagers, as young as 14, to kill a bull as a mark of them now being a Zulu warrior.

Usually about 40 young men come to kill the bull. The one condition is that they must use their bare hands. They will kick and punch the bull. In addition, the boys will gouge the bull’s eyes, twist his testicles, shove dirt and hands down his throat and tear his skin off his body. The bull will have to endure all of these cruel, torturous acts until he finally dies.

Bulls can experience fear and pain just like humans. No living being should be subjected to acts of torture like this. Bulls are intelligent, curious, and sentient beings. They are quite social and form friendships. In this festival, a lone bull is attacked by 40 boys. Forty against one is no sign of a warrior.

I am asking you to put an end to this annual act of animal abuse. There are other ways to mark the coming of age as a warrior. An obstacle course or another type of difficult task could be used as a replacement. Please consider the pain and fear the bull feels as he is torn apart and beaten alive.

  1. Cecily Colloby says:

This is almost beyond belief, but does not surprise me-these low-life morons are capable of anything, especially when it comes to torturing an animal which can’t fight back! What a bunch of heroes! I’d love to see THEM torn limb from limb by a pack of wild animals-I’d be cheering them on….

  2. YVONNE DAVIS says:

Sorry Zulus but in this day and age, there are so many non violent ways to “coming of age” that this tradition needs to be updated. It’s no longer a rite of “coming of age”, it’s now a rite for becoming an abusive bully.

  3. Natasha polychuk says:

fucking assholes!!!!!They shoukd be beaten!!!1 I hate people!

  4. Sick cruel people abound in this world!

40 monstrous demented humans against one terrified bull, torturing until death.

These poor intelligent social animals don’t even have a chance against barbaric humans.

This is the way Zulu boys become men?!! This is just training savages to become more savage!

This idiocy and sadistic inhumanity to a defenseless animal

  5. It is appalling that such violent behavior is accepted and practiced in your country. Children that are bred and exposed to cruelty from a tender age are incorrigible. They will escalate to become sociopaths and their compulsive urge to kill is certainly of concern and a threat to all living beings in the world locally or overseas. Please, BAN FESTIVALS THAT’S CRUEL & TORTURE ANIMALS TO THEIR DEATHS. The world has evolved, and 21st century DO NOT CONDONE SUCH RIDICULOUS AND UNNECESSARY ANIMAL CRUELTY. If you sincerely believe in GOD, you should know that ALL LIFE IS PRECIOUS. Your country will progress and be blessed if you straightened out your act and start TREATING YOUR ANIMALS RIGHT BY BEING KIND TO THEM. END ANNUAL CRUEL ANIMAL FESTIVALS NOW.
