Stop Slaughtering Wild Horses for Meat

Target: Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Goal: Protect horses from slaughter and sale for human consumption.

Nearly 150,000 horses are shipped to Canada and Mexico yearly for human consumption despite the fact that 80 percent of Americans believe eating horses is unethical. Current U.S. laws prohibiting horse slaughter for human feasting must be renewed annually and do not prevent export of American horses who will knowingly be slaughtered food.

Some may argue that these horses are not healthy and would thus be slaughtered anyway, but horses sold for food are priced by the amount of meat, just as any other food animal. So, healthier, meatier horses bring more money, making it far more plausible that perfectly healthy horses are being given a one-way ticket to someone’s stomach.

Even more horrifying than the brutal slaughter of such magnificent animals is the torture they must endure prior to their death. Horses have intense flight instincts and a strong physical make-up, which makes them incredibly difficult to stun, frequently requiring multiple blows to the head before becoming unconscious. No animal deserves to suffer this way.

Fortunately for horses in America, there is a surprisingly simple solution: H.R.1942 the Safeguard American Foods Act is currently before the House and would both permanently ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption in America as well as ban the exportation of horses for food slaughter. Sign the petition below and tell the House of Representatives to pass this bill and protect all American horses from this awful fate.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Ryan,

Eighty percent of Americans believe horses should not be human food. Despite that, nearly 150,000 horses are exported for slaughter and human consumption each year. Current U.S. laws prohibiting horse slaughter for human ingestion apply only to horses slaughtered in the U.S., not those being exported for certain death, and must be renewed annually.

In addition, healthy horses sold to slaughter have intense flight instincts and strong physique at full strength. This makes them incredibly hard to stun, which means they’re often stuck in the head several times before becoming unconscious. They’re subjected to this terror after a frightening cross-border trip leading these glorious and strong animals to human stomachs.

Thankfully, the House has before it H.R.1942, which would make this brutality permanently illegal in the U.S. and would also ban exportation of horses for the purpose of human food. We, the undersigned, demand this legislation be passed without delay.

Sincerely,

  1. It is outrageous and unacceptable that this criminal and inhumane activity goes unpunished. The Department of the Interior’s Department of the Inspector General recently released a damning report which makes it clear that in 2012 a Bureau of Land Management Employee knowingly and illegally sold almost 1,800 wild horses to a known slaughter buyer with the knowledge and apparent approval of her superiors, in clear violation of the 1971 Federal Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, and against the will of the American People who fund the Department of the Interior and its Bureau of Land Management with our tax dollars. Not only was the employee not disciplined; she was actually given a bonus- a bonus which she has yet to repay. THIS KIND OF BLATANT CRIMINALITY BY PERSONS EMPLOYED BY AN AGENCY WHICH IS CHARGED WITH SERVING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, NOT SUBVERTING THE LAW AND THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. I DEMAND A FULL CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION OF THE THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT’S WILD HORSE AND BURRO PROGRAM, AND FUNDAMENTAL REFORMS AIMED AT HUMANELY AND SUSTAINABLY TREATING OUR REVERED AND RAPIDLY DISAPPEARING WILD HORSES AND BURROS, AS WELL AS SUSTAINABLY MANAGING OUR NATION’S PUBLIC LANDS AND THE WILD AND ENDEMIC SPECIES WHICH CALL THEM HOME, BOTH FOR THIS AND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Amen. I signed a petition to that effect, but it probably fell on deaf ears. Our government anymore is totally unresponsive to ordinary citizens. It only pays attention to rich donors. Everybody please vote for Bernie Sanders. He scored 100% with the humane society and I would trust him to take care of the Bureau of Land Mismanagement.

  2. Myrna Burdick says:

First and foremost, owners of horses need to stop
breeding their horses. Horses are expensive animals to maintain and when the cost becomes too much they resort to an auction. Of course, they stupidly think the buyer wants a companion animal but it is probably really a “killer buyer”.
Limiting the mass slaughter of horses to deter human consumption will result in them being killed for dog food.

Wild horses are a wondrous icon of the west. They
have learned to live on plants and leaves. The horses of the Salt River in AZ eat the eel grass in the river which benefits the state’s money maker of people “tubing down the river”.

Cattlemen need to keep their cattle on their own property and not push the BLM to roundup the wild
horses because they want the land for their cows.

  3. We are getting very close to educating all “people” about the idiocy of killing all of our natural world – this includes animals that need to procreate more to bring their numbers up a lot. Instead, I suggest NOT having children for the next 20 years for ANYBODY!!!! The less people, the less shit will happen to innocents.

  4. THERE IS NO ANIMAL ON THIS EARTH THAT IS SAFE FROM THE HUMAN BEING, AND IT MAKES ME ASHAMED TO BE ONE, WE SHOULD BE LOOKING OUT FOR ALL ANIMALS, THEY HAVE IT AWFUL.

    • Rachel Menti says:

Kay it haunts me all day long what happens to animals in the wild, in the cage, in the laboratory, in the circus, in the sea. I’m willing to leave my life behind to become an assassin n professional poacher hunter nothing would bring me great joy

  5. OMG………….Humans are so vile, evil, greedy, disgusting, appalling, and inhumane. WE MUST TAKE ACTION STAND OUR GROUND AND STOP THIS INSANITY NOW!! WE THE AMERICAN PUBLIC OWN THESE HORSES (THEY BELONG TO US) AND THE LAND THEY LIVE ON WHY THE BLM WHO WE PAY TO PROTECT THESE HORSES LET THIS HAPPEN IS BEYOND ME. THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS WATCHING SO STOP THIS NOW!!

  6. HORSES ARE SMART AND GREAT ANIMALS NOW. THEY ARE NOT FOOD NOW.

  7. Connie Gonzalez says:

Lets stop this and save those poor beautiful animals

  8. I do NOT want my tax dollars to pay for these cruel, unconscionable & needless programs, roundups & experiments — this is horror beyond the pale — Our horses are our icons who deserve our respect & care — our public lands are their home & should remain so — as you know, some things in life are sacred & for us, it’s our horses — Keep in mind this fact — there is NO overpopulation of wild horses — if anything, they are underpopulated on the vast acreage of public lands in the West — Keep in mind that wild horses are a return-native species who help reduce catastrophic wildfires & create biodiversity —  We need the herds to reverse desertification — I can go on & on — on so many levels, it is WRONG to slaughter our horses.
