Provide Safe and Healthy Food for Pets

Target: Richard Ten Eyck, Association of American Feed Controls Officials, President

Goal: Update standards for pet food manufacturing to ensure only disease-free meat by-products are used.

Over 60 percent of Americans own at least one pet. For most, these pets are members of the family and owners want to be sure that the food they’re feeding their beloved furry, finned, feathered, or scaly friends is of the best possible quality. The pet food industry is currently overseen by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), which is made up entirely of volunteers from local, state, and federal authorities. The AAFCO does not have regulatory authority. Instead, they aim to develop laws, regulations, and standards that result in industry uniformity. Unfortunately, uniformity does not necessarily equate to high standards or safe and healthy food for precious pets. We must demand better standards for pet food.

According to current standards, pet food labels can list “meat by-product” as an ingredient. By AAFCO definition, meat by-product can include animal organs such as lungs, liver, kidneys, brain, heart, and stomach as well as bones and blood. In the wild, animals would certainly eat all of these items but the current standards actually allow for these parts to come from sick and diseased animals. In addition, reports allege that cremains from deceased pets are added to pet food on a regular basis and frequently listed as “ash” on the label.

No one wants to feed their cherished pet food that might make them ill and no one wants to think of their furry, finned, feathered, or scaly family members becoming another pet’s food. Demand this standard be updated to ensure only healthy meat by-products are used to manufacture pet food.

Dear Mr. Ten Eyck,

More than 69 million households in the U.S. have at least one pet. As a farmer and pet owner yourself, you surely understand the deep love pet owners have for their furry, finned, and scaly family members. The Association of American Feed Control Officials develops the standards from which state authorities derive their regulatory requirements for pet food manufacture.

As currently written, meat by-products from ill or diseased animals is not restricted. Other reports suggest the use of pet cremains is also not restricted. It is horrifying to think that despite the best of intentions, tens of millions of Americans are likely feeding their cherished pets food that may make their animals ill or food that was made with someone else’s family pet.

Help owners across America ensure their precious pets are fed only food that will keep them healthy and well nourished by updating the AAFCO standards to exclude ill or diseased meat by-product and cremains.

We need to ensure that all food for our pets is good healthy food

  2. Natasha polychuk Natasha polychuk says:

every animal should have healthy food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  3. Stan Benton says:

Gee, even though we can’t fight the sellouts to the likes of Monsanto and GMA on the GMOs for humans issue, maybe we could sneak in banning toxic GMOs or meat from animals fed toxic GMOs in our pet food?

  4. Susan Thixton has been an untiring crusader for high quality foods for our companion animals. She actually attends the AAFCO meetings and has been very effective in educating the public to the point where she is often reviled by them.
Please become educated about what is in the food your companion animals eat, it is a matter of life and death for them:

  5. FINALLY! something is coming out about this! It’s about time because we don’t even know what’s in our own food let alone our pet’s food. A company like Blue, I have bought from for years until I found out that they test on animals! What in the hell would you be putting in animal food that requires testing???!!!

  6. Most pet food is unhealthy toxic garbage and it is slowly (sometimes quickly) killing our animals. Most is unfit for human consumption or for any other living being, for that matter. Kidney disease, cancers, etc. have increased (yet rarely, if at all, exists in the wild populations). We are killing our pets by feeding horrific, unnatural, poisonous crap to our pets and our farm animals. Most (not all) pet food companies don’t care, as long as they make millions of dollars and get rid of their waste products in pet foods.
According to Federal Law pet “foods” are not supposed to contain diseased animals, those dead from other than slaughter, toxic chemicals, rendered cats/dogs, rancid grease, yet the FDA allows the industry to break Federal laws!
The “slop” should not even be in feed, let alone pet food.
We are torturing and killing our farms animals and doing the same to our pets. The obsessive greed and sociopaths running the corporations are ruing this planet and every living being in it!

  7. Myrna Burdick says:

How many more years do we have to wait for the pet food companies to start putting a decent, safe, product out there for our family members??????????

The companies buy the tainted meat, organs, beaks, blood from the slaughter houses to make up their kibble. Then they add lots of sugar to make it pallitable to their pets. Greyhound
kennels feed this corruption directly from the slaughterhouses –that is why the teeth of the greys are in such bad shape. But, of course, heaven help them but what are they to do with so many dogs to feed?

Read labels very carefully, and do not under any
circumstances buy anything for your pet from china. When that asian country had the big die off of chickens they hopped on the money bandwagon and sold the diseased chicken flesh for “pet treats”. And of course American companies were all too anxious to package the crap so they could feed from the same slop trough as china.
