Applaud Action to Protect Species at Risk

Target: Leona Aglukkaq, Canadian Minister of the Environment

Goal: Praise funding toward the conservation of at-risk and endangered species and their environments

The Canadian Minister of the Environment recently announced an initiative to fund over 160 programs that focus on protecting species at risk in Canada. Eleven and a half million dollars from the Habitat Stewardship Program will be distributed to various organizations dedicated to animal conservation, environmental recovery, and the protection of biodiversity.

One of the programs to receive funding is a project led by the British Columbia Conservation Foundation which aims to maintain the integrity of British Colombia’s coastal ecosystems. The program works to mitigate threats to the natural ecosystem posed by habitat destruction, human interference, and invasive species of plants and animals.

The program will provide funding to the Marine Science Center at the Vancouver Aquarium where it will be used for research on how to reduce physical disturbances, entanglement, and injuries due to contact with ships in local whale, dolphin, and sea turtle populations. The aquarium scientists also focus on protecting ocean and marine habitats.

The Habitat Stewardship Program is one of many projects to receive funding from Stephen Harper’s newly announced National Conservation Plan, which works to ensure the survival of native Canadian species. Since 2006, the Habitat Stewardship Program has invested over $86 million dollars toward almost 1500 environmental organizations, benefiting 431 at-risk species throughout Canada.

The funding provided will be a great help to some of Canada’s at-risk and endangered species, including grizzly bears, whales, and owls, helping to preserve some of Canada’s most fragile ecosystems for future generations. Your signature will commend the Canadian government’s funding of animal conservation programs.

Dear Honorable Leona Aglukkaq,

Eleven and a half million dollars in funding was recently announced for the Habitat Stewardship Program, a project designed to protect the environment for endangered and at-risk species. The Stewardship Program will pass the money on to 160 organizations across Canada which will promote the recovery of habitats and wildlife.

These programs include the Vancouver Aquarium’s research of marine environments in order to diminish the risks posed to marine animals by ships, fishing nets, and human disturbances. Another program receiving funding is the British Columbia Conservation Foundation, which works to protect BC’s coastal ecosystems.

It is important to preserve the balance of Canada’s environments so that endangered and at-risk animals can thrive once again. I applaud your support of programs dedicated to protecting Canada’s wildlife and ecosystems.

Signed, but I didn’t see any mention of stopping the annual seal slaughter. That would certainly help Canada’s wildlife.

  2. Linda French says:

Not sure to sign this or not. With the history of the Conservative party being so anti environment, and wildlife protection of any kind. Maybe a lot of words now, because we are going into a election year…but with no follow up.

Where is the protection for our Polar Bears! You know the ones you applaud when killed and hunted by your relatives!
