Target: The Honorable Moses Jean Baptiste, Minister for Agriculture, Food Production, Fisheries and Rural Development
Goal: Save endangered sea turtles from massive, legal annual hunt.
It will soon be legal hunting season to kill endangered sea turtles. Activists need to take action to try and stop this senseless hunt from taking place in order to better ensure that these majestic animals do not become extinct.
While it is illegal to harass sea turtles that are nesting, to destroy sea turtle nests, or to steal and sell sea turtle eggs, it is –unfortunately—not illegal to hunt three species of endangered sea turtles from early October to late December in the country of St. Lucia. The species of sea turtles that the government allows to be hunted include the hawksbill, loggerhead and green sea turtle.
Turtles and turtle parts are also allowed to be sold in designated places. However, it is against the law to either sell these products online, in most areas, or to trade turtle or turtle parts on the international market.
Considering that “endangered” means that the animals will likely become “extinct in the near future” if serious efforts are not made to save them, it is ironic that such a hunting season would be legal in any country.
Demand this hunting season be outlawed by signing this petition. Killing endangered animals is irresponsible and is in no way helpful to preserving a fragile environment for future generations.
Dear Honorable Baptiste,
As you know, it is legal to hunt three types of endangered sea turtles from early October to late December in your country. It is important that this hunt be permanently banned, as the fact that these animals are endangered means they could easily go extinct without granted legal protections.
Since it is already illegal for people to hunt nesting sea turtles or to destroy sea turtle nests or eggs, it should also be illegal for people to kill these animals. If these sea turtles are not granted legal protections, it is likely that people will not truly understand just how endangered they are. People may then—in turn–have no compunction about hunting them out of season since they are less likely to realize that most species of sea turtles are listed as endangered in many places around the world.
For all of these reasons, I urge you to support stopping this yearly hunt, which may eventually serve to kill off these beautiful animals. By allowing sea turtles that are likely to become extinct in the near future to be killed, we are setting an extremely poor example for our children.
