Protect Critically Endangered Wildlife from Lead Poisoning

Target: Governor Jerry Brown and California State Legislature

Goal: Demand that a ban on lead ammunition, which is crucial to protect the California Condor, not be delayed for five years.

On October 11th, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a ban on the use of lead ammunition for any hunting purposes, making California the first state to pass legislation to protect wildlife from this toxic element. While this ban will ensure increased protection for the already vulnerable California Condor as well as many other wildlife species, it is not set to take effect until 2019. Sign this petition to tell Governor Brown that this six year waiting period before the ban on lead ammunition takes effect needs to be drastically reduced for the sake of vulnerable wildlife.

Although it is honorable that California has officially become the first state to completely ban lead ammunition, waiting six years for the ban to take effect can have dire consequences for both wildlife and human beings. It has been known by scientists for many years that exposure to lead can be extremely harmful, but action has only recently begun to take place regarding this issue. Lead is extremely threatening to scavenging species that are exposed to the element by eating animals shot with lead ammunition. Hunters who eat game shot with lead ammunition are equally susceptible to becoming exposed to lead poisoning.

One species in particular that cannot afford exposure to lead toxicity is the California Condor. In the 1980s, this species was almost extinct with only 22 of the birds remaining at the time. After much effort to repopulate the Condor, their population is now up to 400 birds, but they are still at great risk as exposure to lead is the leading cause of death amongst the species, and the leading cause of exposure is from lead ammunition. If Governor Brown allows the next six years to pass without taking action against the use of lead ammunition, this could mean losing the ability to sustain the entire California Condor population. Tell Governor Brown that six years is simply too long to wait and that we demand an earlier date for the ban on lead ammunition.

Dear Governor Brown,

It has come to my attention that you recently signed a ban on the use of lead ammunition for any hunting purposes in the state of California, currently set to take effect in the year 2019. While this is a progressive step towards protecting wildlife, the environment and human beings, waiting six years before completely restricting lead ammunition will allow species like the vulnerable California Condor to remain threatened by exposure to lead toxicity. It is absolutely crucial that you put this ban into effect sooner than 2019, for the sake of protecting a species that could potentially become extinct if we continue to allow the use of lead ammunition.

The California Condor already faced near extinction in the 1980s, but has now been restored to 400 birds after a successful effort to repopulate the species. However, the leading cause of death for this scavenging bird is exposure to lead, and the leading cause of exposure to lead is eating animals shot with lead ammunition. By putting the ban on lead ammunition into effect sooner rather than later, you will  be taking an extremely important step in protecting this species, as well as many other birds and mammals in California. Not only will you be possibly saving an entire species from extinction, you will also be setting an example for every other state in the nation by leading the way in wildlife protection and preservation.
