Target: Tom Vilsack, Secretary of the USDA
Goal: Punish the biotech company that allegedly left neglected goats locked in a barn to hide them from federal inspectors and neglected rabbits who needed treatment.
A biotech company that supplies science labs with antibodies harvested from the blood of thousands of goats and rabbits is being investigated for neglecting the animals left in its care. Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc. in San Luis Obispo, Calif., is accused of hiding hundreds of neglected goats in a barn from inspectors for years. When federal investigators made a recent visit, they saw sick and dying goats who had been shot in the head with a bolt gun.
The company supposedly failed to provide adequate veterinary care for sick goats, leaving the goats to suffer and even die. Rather than providing care for the animals, workers would simply shoot and kill them. When the company would provide care, it would use uncertified veterinary technicians to care for animals rather than licensed techs or veterinarians. This abuse has allegedly been going on for years.
This abuse and neglect has been allowed to continue thanks to loopholes and minimized punishments from the Animal Welfare Act. Companies cannot be allowed to continue to get away with this kind of disgusting mistreatment of animals. Innocent animals should not suffer and die at the hands of humans using them for a profit.
Urge officials to punish Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc. to the full extent of the law and shut it down.
Dear Secretary Vilsack,
Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc. has been neglecting animals for years. They have been performing medical procedures on animals then leaving them to suffer without veterinary care. When the animals do get treatment, it’s from people who aren’t qualified to care for them. Rather than helping the animals, they are shot to death to simply be disposed of.
This company even went so far as to hide hundreds of suffering animals in a barn to keep federal inspectors from seeing them. This kind of horrific animal neglect has resulted in the death of innocent animals and this absolutely cannot keep happening.
I urge you to punish Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc. to the full extent of the law and shut it down.
