Hold Fundraisers to Save Hawaiian Monk Seal

Target: Lee C. Ehmke, Director and President of the Minnesota Zoo

Goal: Hold charity events in order to raise money to buy cameras that will help scientists learn more about why Hawaiian monk seals are endangered.

To try and help save the critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal, a zoo has a fundraising page posted on its website. They will likely help many animals if they also throw special events in order to raise more money for this effort.

The Minnesota Zoo is housing five formerly rescued Hawaiian monk seals that would not make it on their own if they were released back into the wild. It is the only zoo outside of Hawaii where these amazing animals can be found. Since the zoo is able to provide these animals with a favorable home, they are using the unique opportunity to educate the public about the threats they face while living in the wild.

In order to discover new ways that scientists can help these animals, the zoo has set up a fundraising page to help with conservation efforts. Specifically, zoo officials are raising money for critter cameras that will be attached to the Hawaiian monk seals in order to learn more about their greatest threats.

Sign this petition and urge the zoo to also hold fundraising events such as holiday parties in order to raise more money for this very needed equipment. The more cameras that are able to be purchased, the better chance we will have to save these beautiful animals.

Dear Director Ehmke,

It is very exciting that your zoo is raising money to help Hawaiian monk seals through your website. If the zoo were to also hold events such as holiday parties, it is likely that even more money could be raised to better help these efforts.

As you know, the critter cameras that are being bought with the money made from conservation efforts are extremely important in order to help scientists better understand how people can help Hawaiian monk seals more successfully survive in the wild. Obviously, the more cameras that are able to be utilized, the more scientists will learn about the Hawaiian monk seals’ plight.

It would likely not be difficult to sell tickets on the zoo’s website for various fun charity events that the zoo could hold either during or after hours. It could even be explained that tickets on the website were being sold at a higher price in order to help raise money to save the animals.

I therefore urge you to hold charitable events in an effort to help save more Hawaiian monk seals. If we do everything we can today, hope will remain strong that these unique animals will still be here tomorrow.
