Protect Pets from Contaminated Food

Target: Food and Drug Administration

Goal: Commend federal agency for proposing regulations to protect animals and people from contaminated pet food.

The Food and Drug Administration recently proposed a rule, in the wake of recent pet deaths and a recall of tainted jerky treats, to regulate pet and animal food products for the first time. FDA officials said this regulation would protect both animals and also people, who could get sick from just handling contaminated food or from touching pets who have eaten it.

The proposal comes six years after the biggest pet food recall in history, when a Chinese producer contaminated dog and cat food with melamine, a compound used in plastics, causing the deaths of animals across the United States. More recently, chicken, duck, and sweet potato jerky treats imported from China caused over 850 pet deaths. These major incidents caused a public outcry for the FDA to regulate pet foods as well as human food.

The proposal is open for public comment for 120 days. If passed, it would regulate the production of feed for millions of farm animals, including cows, pigs and chickens, as well as pet food. The rules would require makers of animal food sold in the United States to develop a written plan to prevent food-borne illnesses, like salmonella, and put it into effect. Producers would need to put protective procedures into place at critical points in the production process where problems are likely to arise.

The FDA regulating pet food would mean safety for people’s pets and fewer incidents that result in pet deaths. Commend the FDA for proposing this regulation and ask them to put it into effect.

Dear Food and Drug Administration,

Thank you for proposing a regulation to protect pets by regulating pet food. If pet food was regulated, we would have many fewer pet deaths from contaminated pet food and treats. Both humans and animals would be safer if food was under strict regulations.

Please pass this regulation to protect pets from dangerous food. Action to make pet food safer for both people and pets has been a long time coming, and this regulation needs to be implemented.

  1. WHAT?!?!?!? They never did?? OMG if the USA don’t protect animal food (and TO HELL with just doing it for people touching it, are you kidding me??? Besides, it’s disloyal from a company! I buy their food to take care of my pet not to kill him/her!) If the USA don’t do it… my God, Latin America is doom. I will start feeding a raw diet to my cats.

  2. The govt allows us and farm animals to eat GMOs so do they really care about us? Um NO. (Look whos running the FDA) Look how they allow the animals to be treated…
This is WAAAAAAAAY overdue and its about damn time. Its only been 6 years since the first death..Another reason to ban china crap. I’ll still be surprised if it goes thru cuz the FDA is worthless and only on the take.
    Yeah, I SAID IT.

  3. I couldn’t have said it better Gina!
