Stop Slaughtering Animals During Week-Long “Canned Hunt”

Lioness and cub

Target: Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa

Goal: Stop week-long hunting event where hundreds of wild animals are murdered in a confined space.

Eighteen animals were savagely killed in a less than two-day time period by canned hunters. Activists need to take action now to try and save the lives of many more helpless animals.

Hunters are currently shooting at several animals while standing on raised platforms at Braam Farm in the Limpopo province of South Africa. Sadly, the 13 hunters will be participating in this shameful event for the next eight days. Animals are not even given the chance to hide, as people known as drivers are being paid to beat on drums in order to force them to run in the direction of the hunters.

Horrifyingly, they experience painful deaths whenever hunters are not able to kill them with one direct shot. In fact, one small buck did not die immediately after being hit. Instead, it suffered needlessly afterwards and suffered even more when it was killed by a pack of mauling dogs.

Sign this petition and demand this hunt end promptly. Such cowardly events should never be condoned.

Dear President Zuma,

Several animals have already been killed in a massive canned hunt at Braam Farm located in the Limpopo province. The hunt needs to stop immediately, as no animal deserves to be slaughtered in this heartless manner.

It is pathetic that 13 hunters will be allowed to continuously shoot at these animals for the next eight days, especially since the animals are being coaxed out into the open by people who are hired to beat on drums. Besides dealing with a great deal of stress, some animals have also suffered unspeakable amounts of pain when hunters were unable to kill them with one clean shot.

One study found that private game reserves profited much more from eco-tourism than they did from the canned hunting industry. While hunters may pay a premium to shoot one animal, eco-tourists continue to return year after year to photograph and observe an abundance of animals. Such an abundance cannot be maintained when these animals are being constantly shot. In addition, there are also several experts that claim ecotourism creates more jobs than the number of jobs that are created through the hunting industry.

Therefore, allowing this or other similar events to continuously take place is absolutely absurd. It is for these reasons that I urge you to stop this senseless and inhumane hunt immediately. Animals are needlessly dying and when hunting is compared to the amount of money ecotourism is able to bring to South Africa, neither animals nor people are winning in the process.

South Africa has always been a Country that has been proud of our Wildlife, proud that we took good care of them and proud that our Wildlife are all South African too. What has happened to that?
Can/Trophy Hunters have caused an African “Trail of Tears” in our Country and in other parts of Africa too. Remember Cecil the beloved Lion.
President Zuma, when all our precious African Lions are murdered out by these Cowards, our next Generation will only see one of our percious Lions in a Zoo somewhere or see one on some Hunter’s Wall…not a good thought at all and not what most South African would want to happen.
Please STOP the “Trail of Tears” here in South Africa, show the World what a caring, loving President you really are and end the Can/Trophy Hunting here.
STOP the pain and suffering of our Animals and protect them, start a movement in South Africa and in the rest of Africa where it is not humane to murder Animals who feel pain, experience suffering, stress and trauma, sadness and joy.
Time for South Africa to be able to hold our heads up high again, be proud to say we live in a Country where Animals are protected and cared for.
