Target: Sandy City Councilwoman, Kristin Coleman-Nicholl
Goal: Praise city for banning the use of gas chambers to euthanize animals.
The inhumane use of gas chambers is still a huge issue in many parts of the world. Thankfully, the Sandy City Council in Utah came to a unanimous decision that will require that the euthanization of animals be performed by lethal injection rather than by a gas chamber starting in 2016. Led by City Councilwoman Kristin Coleman-Nicholl, the new law was agreed upon by the entire council.
The only debate was over how long it will take for animal control officers to transition to the new method of euthanization. Supporters wanted lethal injection to be adopted immediately, while officers wanted eight months to train and prepare for the change. After the discussion, the council and officers agreed on four months to train and get the officers ready. Although Sandy Animal Control does not use its gas chambers for the euthanization of cats and dogs, a large number of skunks and raccoons are euthanized by the gas chamber every year.
Numerous Sandy residents supported the decision to switch to lethal injections, saying that it is much more humane because it works faster than gas chambers. Please sign this petition to thank the Sandy City Council for its unanimous vote to stop the use of gas chambers and adopt a more humane and cost effective method to euthanize their animals.
Dear Sandy City Councilwoman Kristin Coleman-Nicholl,
The Sandy City Council recently decided to stop the use of gas chambers to euthanize animals and instead use a method that is less cruel. The vote won by a landslide with only concerns about the timing of when to implement the new method. Starting in 2016, Sandy City Animal Control will only be allowed to use lethal injection when the euthanization of an animal is required.
Thank you for leading the decision to adopt the process of lethal injections for euthanizing animals in Sandy City, Utah. The use of gas chambers is cruel for many reasons, mainly because it is inhumane to trap an animal in a chamber of poisonous carbon monoxide and wait for it to die. Lethal injections are much faster and the animal is not afraid for its life in the process. Hopefully, in the near future, more cities will choose to ban the use of gas chambers and no animal will ever have to suffer in one ever again.
