Target: MSPCA Officer Christine Allenberg
Goal: Support the arrest of a couple accused of keeping over 200 animal carcasses in their refrigerators and freezers.
The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) filed a criminal complaint with authorities to charge two people with several counts of animal cruelty after a thorough inspection in August 2015 at their home led to the discovery of about 280 dead animals stored in their freezers and refrigerators and over 120 other animals living in their own filth.
The official state report described the house as filthy and a large number of the animals living inside and outside of the house showed clear signs of neglect and injuries. When the officers entered the home through the front door, the odor of urine, feces, and decay overwhelmed them. There were cages holding cats and ferrets with no signs of food or water anywhere. The staff from Animal Control and the MSPCA worked together and removed about 280 dead animals from the home, including 65 dead animals from two refrigerators and over 200 animals from three freezers in their garage.
According to the court documents, Kathleen McHendry and Ronald Richard, the owners of the home, were each charged with 11 counts of felony animal cruelty and the authorities vacated their house. If they are convicted, they will both face fines and imprisonment. McHendry is adamant about defending her treatment of all of the animals. She still does not think she needs a veterinarian to help her care for her animals.

Dear Officer Christine Allenberg,
A couple in Springfield, Massachusetts has been charged with animal cruelty after your team uncovered an unimaginable secret they were keeping. The officers were faced with a disgusting odor and a disturbing sight of animal cruelty. Officers found 280 dead animals spread out among refrigerators and freezers along with emaciated animals in and outside of their home.
Thank you and the team at the MSPCA for making this discovery and charging the individuals with animal cruelty. Although Kathleen McHendry still insists that she was capable of taking care of the animals without the help of veterinarians, that clearly wasn’t the case. Hopefully, these two individuals will be convicted for multiple counts of animal cruelty and finally pay for the crimes that they allegedly committed.
