Praise Town For Banning Bullfights in Favor of Books

Target: Mayor of Villafranca de los Caballeros Julián Bolaños

Goal: Praise town for canceling their annual bullfight and using the money to buy children’s school supplies.

Newly elected socialist mayor Julián Bolaños has banned his town’s annual bullfight and will use money saved to provide books and school supplies for local children. The mayor of Villafranca de los Caballeros estimated that the small town of 5,200 had been spending close to €18,000 a year on an event that promotes animal cruelty and violence. Villafranca de los Caballeros is one of many Spanish cities that are doing their part in the fight to end animal cruelty that has been so deeply ingrained in Spanish culture and tourism.

Mayor of Madrid Manuela Carmena has also stated that not a single euro of public money will be spent on bullfighting events, and the same has been said for towns such as Valencia and Alicante. Alicante’s bull run, a traditional part of the town’s August festival, has now been replaced with a bicycle race and the government plans to ban municipal lands from bullfighting use by 2017. Thank the mayor of Villafranca de los Caballeros for doing his part to end animal cruelty in the country once and for all.

Dear Mayor Julián Bolaños,

Thank you so much for the efforts you have put forward to end national bullfighting and the good you have done in the process. Because of the ban on your local bullfight this year, almost $20,000 that would have been used for the senseless abuse and slaughter of innocent animals is now being contributed to the education of your children and future citizens. Because bullfighting, the burning bull, and bull runs are so ingrained in Spanish culture and tourism, the battle to end it completely is an uphill one. But without advocates with power such as you, as well as the mayors of Valencia and Alicante, there wouldn’t even be a start.

Many people are reluctant to end these events because of the cultural ties it has in early Spanish tradition, as well as the country’s tourism revenue and improved economy. But no dollar amount is worth the life and well-being of an innocent being, no matter how big or small. By setting an example to the rest of your country and fellow authoritarians, you are paving the way to a brighter and animal cruelty-free future for your country. Thank you for the action you have already taken and please continue to fight until animal cruelty in Spain is stopped.

I am stunned. Spain may once again be on our travel agenda. Prior to this move, we have diligently boycotted Spain in our travels.

  4. Thank you a million fold — for your rationality, for your compassion — keep it up — there’s still much work to do — once again, thank you deeply for doing the right thing.
