Stop Killing Our Ocean’s Crucial Marine Life

Bumble Bee Foods trawls our international oceans resulting in severe bycatch.

Target: Christopher Lischewski, CEO of Bumble Bee Foods

Goal: Stop unnecessarily killing sharks and other key marine life with unsustainable fishing practices.

Bumble Bee Foods, alongside its competitors, kills “tens of thousands of sharks and other marine animals” annually according to Greenpeace. Bumble Bee practices unsustainable and destructive mass fishing to catch its product to the point that tuna is quickly becoming an endangered species.

While the book and movie “Jaws” may have instilled a fear of sharks in all of us, the reality is these creatures are crucial to the ocean’s balance. Sharks play a very important role in the ocean’s overall ecosystem and food chain, and the more that are removed via careless and inhumane fishing methods, the more danger is posed to the Earth’s precious oceanic environment. There is no reason to destroy precious marine life and our oceans simply to sell a cheap can of tuna.

Other companies have stepped up and sustainably fish and even line-catch the tuna they can and sell. The fact that Bumble Bee refuses to do so makes it clear that the company is only interested in its bottom line–ironic when you consider that it is currently destroying the one thing that makes it money. Do not buy Bumble Bee tuna, and let the company’s president know through sales and your voice that you will not stand for the unnecessary killing of our ocean’s sharks and other marine life during tuna fishing.

Dear Mr. Lischewski,

It is a well-known fact that unsustainable fishing alongside overfishing is taking a drastic toll on our oceans. Your company, which is known to engage in unsustainable fishing practices, is responsible for the death of tens of thousands of sharks and other marine life that is critical to the Earth’s oceans.

Your company has a moral obligation to its consumers to practice sustainable fishing habits. No one wants to buy a can of tuna from a company that so blatantly disregards the safety of marine life while securing its catch, which, by the way, is becoming endangered itself.

Sharks are unnecessarily killed on every Bumble Bee fishing trip. This is inexcusable when you consider that other companies easily and sustainably catch their tuna. Stop killing our ocean life with your inhumane and environmentally destructive tuna fishing. After all, isn’t it poetic justice that you are destroying the one thing that makes you money? Think about that.

  1. Bubblebee, I haven’t bought your tuna in well over a year; I have found another brand that sells only SUSTAINABLY CAUGHT tuna. Why don’t you join this company and march yourselves into a better light. As it is now, you are among the Bad Guys. The amounts of tuna and all the other fish you heedlessly kill are FINITE. Stop being greedy. Ocean life is in trouble, and you are a big part of why it is.

  2. While Bumble Bee keeps its inhumane and cruel methods to cash fish I personally pledge to boycott their products.

  3. Doing the right thing is reason enough!
