Target: Animal Place Executive Director, Kim Sturla
Goal: Thank Animal Place for their effort in rescuing hens that would have otherwise been killed.
Recently, around 500 hens were rescued from a California factory farm and taken to a chicken sanctuary in Vacaville. The hens, between 1 1/2-2 years, of age were too old to be productive egg layers. Volunteers from Animal Place rescued the hens and will clean and rehabilitate the birds before getting them ready for adoption. This is thanks to the efforts of animal activists around the world and here at ForceChange.
Animal Place works with other organizations to find homes for these kinds of birds that would have otherwise been killed. Hens make excellent pets because they can adapt to life as regular, free-roaming animals. In the United States, Animal place is the only sanctuary that conducts large-scale rescues, with reports indicating that the facility has saved up to 17,473 animals in recent years.
Hens from industrial facilities are usually bred to lay more eggs than the average birds. Unfortunately, these animals are typically killed and replaced with newer ones once their egg production slows. These creatures are killed without consideration that they still have many years of life ahead.
The animals are kept in enclosed areas and rarely touch the ground or even spread their wings for around 14 months. These hens wish to nest, but they are unable due to their wired cages. They are denied natural behaviors because those who keep them are selfish and only want to maximize profits from the sale of their eggs.
Sign the petition to applaud Animal Place for working to save 500 lives that were destined for the slaughterhouse.
Dear Kim Sturla,
Recently, your facility rescued hundreds of chicken that had spent their whole lives in cramped cages of a factory farm. You have given these animals a chance to be free and to experience a healthy lifestyle.
You have rescued these animals from a facility that merely viewed them as commodities, and where their existence was one of constant misery, discomfort and lack of freedom. Once the hens outlive their commercial value, they are slated for killing and disposal. However, you managed to change that due to your efforts. You have intervened on behalf of these birds and liberated them to a new life of comfort and peace in a sanctuary. Rescuers like you help in changing the outlook for such animals. Thank you for your effort and keep up the good work.
