Demand Justice for Police Dogs Left to Die in Hot Cars

Target: Mike Johnson, President of the American Police Canine Association

Goal: Bring justice to police dogs left to die in hot cars by police officers.

Five police dogs have suffered horrible deaths from being left in hot cars by their handlers. The handlers have not been punished, unless you count a paid vacation as punishment.

An everyday citizen who leaves their dog in a hot car and discovers the dog dead would face anywhere from one to five years in jail and be fined tens of thousands of dollars, and rightfully so. But why have all five of these police officers gotten off without a single punishment and in some cases, a paid vacation?

This July, a seven-year-old German Shephard named Baston in Savannah, Georgia suffered a horrific fate when he was allegedly left in a sweltering police car before his handler realized that he had forgotten the dog in the car. Boston was a member of the Savannah State University police department, and repeated calls to the department to ask the status of his handler were met with silence.

Another incident occurred in May in Hialeah, Florida when two police dogs named Hector and Jimmy died in an overheated car when Officer Nelson Enriquez allegedly forgot about them and left them overnight in his vehicle. Officer Enriquez was suspended with pay after the incident and phone calls to the department were ignored. This is tragic because Enriquez was essentially given paid vacation for being so negligent and killing two hardworking K9s.

The apparent incompetence of these two police officers only scratch the surface. Three other incidents were reported this summer and none of the police officers were punished for their horrible negligence. Please sign the petition below to demand justice for these poor dogs and to make K9 handlers more diligent about leaving their K9 partners in hot cars.

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I am deeply saddened by the news that five police dogs have already succumbed to horrible deaths because of their handlers who left them to die in hot cars. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed and has been swept under the rug by many police departments.

As you know, K9s play an important role in our justice system and deserve to be treated with respect. Many of the recent cases not only forgo punishment for the handler responsible for their deaths, the officers are also given paid leave. This is not justice and police officers will not take this issue seriously when there is no punishment for such negligence.

Please address this issue and bring justice to these poor dogs who died horrible deaths in hot cars. They deserve so much more respect than what we are currently giving them and police officers should treat them as they would a fellow police officer.

In all the years of having lived in the Nevada desert and having been closely associated with Police dogs and their handlers as well as obedience trial exhibitors some years back nothing like that ever happened.
That was before heat alarms and other gadgets. Forgetting your dog in the car is beyond comprehension. If I were a Police Chief or commander I would do my best to get these people fired and charged with cruelty. Something that would have happened years ago regardless of tears and remorse etc… Grow a brain.
They would have been shamed into oblivion. This is killing another officer.

  2. If cops are THAT stupid, ‘forgetful,’ and unremorseful, they shouldn’t be ALLOWED to stay in the profession, for one. For two, if this is how they’re going to behave towards the dogs in their keeping, maybe it’s time to ban USING dogs and their above-human abilities as aids to cops, period. They obviously don’t DESERVE a canine’s help if they’re just going to ‘forget’ about their CARE!

  3. What are you THINKING?! You MUST be alert and vigilant — these are your companions — these wonderful animals are ready to sacrifice their lives for you and THIS is how your return the favor? WAKE UP! These dogs are precious! Their lives are precious!
