Target: Earthjustice Associate Attorney Katherine O’Brien
Goal: Block mining project to take place in critically endangered grizzly bear habitat.
There are only 21 grizzly bears left in the Cabinet Mountains of Montana, and they could vanish altogether if a copper mining project is allowed to strip and destroy their habitat. The Montanore Mining project plans to turn the area into a large-scale mining site that will extract 20,000 tons of copper and silver from the mountain every day for the next 20 years.
Considering how disruptive mining operations are, if this project is allowed to take place, the last of the region’s grizzly bears don’t stand a chance. The project would span across 1,500 acres and drain nearby streams. This would also harm the threatened bull trout that spawn in the area. Unfortunately, even though the Cabinet Mountains are part of a designated grizzly bear recovery area, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decided that the proposed mining operation would not pose a threat to either species and gave their approval for the project to begin.
Environmentalists are taking the issue to court to try and stop this project before it can wipe out the area’s last remaining grizzly bears and disrupt the entire ecosystem of the mountains. By signing this petition, you’ll throw your support behind them and let the state know that you won’t sit back and let threatened animals be wiped out for the sake of some mining company’s profits.
Dear Ms. O’Brien,
I’m writing to offer my support for your lawsuit intending to stop the Montanore Mining project that will take place across 1,500 acres in the Cabinet Mountains. It’s absolutely unacceptable that this project was approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service considering the fact that the area is part of a grizzly bear recovery region that only has 21 individual bears left–not to mention it’s essential habitat for the threatened bull trout.
Due to the destructive nature of all mining operations, there’s no way that this project won’t be disruptive to the local ecosystem. Unfortunately, due to the significant influence that large mining corporations have over our government, they’re often able to push massive projects like this through the approval process even when threatened species are at stake.
For all these reasons, I thank you for doing all you can to stop the Mantanore Mining project before it begins. Please use this petition and all its signatures to show that the public supports you in your efforts to protect the Cabinet Mountains and the threatened animal species that call them home.
