Protect Declining Moose Species

Bull Moose by Thomas

Target: Dan Ashe, Director U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Protect a suffering subspecies of moose that could become extinct within five years.

A particular species of moose has suffered severe declines in population due to climate change and reduction of native habitat. Currently, this type of moose is not federally protected. Although it is classified as a species of special concern, this does not give enough protection to safeguard this species’ future. Speak up now to protect this coveted and majestic creature.

This specific subspecies of moose is found only in the Midwest in the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, and Michigan. Moose declines in Minnesota are alarming with a 60% reduction within the last decade. Experts say that moose in Minnesota could be completely wiped out in five years if protection efforts are not implemented soon.

The reduction of moose is due to the changing climate. Moose thrive in cold and snowy weather and climate change has increased temperatures and reduced snowfall. This causes moose to overheat, which lowers their immune system and leads to malnutrition. Climate change is driven by a variety of factors but the increase of greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of nonrenewable energy sources is a major one.

By signing this petition, you are demanding that this moose species is protected under the Endangered Species Act. Protection strategies should focus on species research, habitat protection, and addressing stricter regulations on greenhouse gas emission. We must protect our wildlife before these precious animals are gone forever.

Dear Director Ashe,

Moose in the Midwest are suffering, especially in Minnesota where moose populations have declined 60% within the past decade. Although moose hunts have been cancelled and hunting tags have been reduced, this species still needs help. There are currently 3,500 individuals in the moose population in Minnesota and experts say that this species could be completely eliminated in five years.

You must federally protect moose populations in the Midwest. Rising temperatures due to climate change have caused moose to suffer through warm winters that cause them to overheat and develop a low immune system. Federal protection for this species will designate more funding for moose research and habitat protection as well as enforce strict regulations for dirty greenhouse gas emissions.

I urge you to please safeguard this struggling species. We must protect our precious wildlife. Take action now to federally protect this endangered animal.
