Success: Carriage Horses Banned in India

Target: Chief Justice Mohit Shah and the Mumbai High Court

Goal: Praise decision to eliminate horse drawn carriages and their inhumane practices.

After years of carriage horses having to endure long hours moving tourists around the hot and overflowing streets in Mumbai, the practice has finally been deemed animal cruelty and steps to end it have started thanks to the High Court decision and numerous voices from locals, tourists, and the community at ForceChange.

By June 2016, these carriages will be off the streets for good and the horses who spent years working them are going to be properly cared for. Consideration was also put in for the hundreds of families who worked the attractions with likely no other options, giving them time and aid in finding alternative work.

The animals reportedly living in the city stables stand in urine and feces and are given little food and unclean water. Allegedly, they often suffer injuries and rarely receive veterinary care despite working hours on the streets in the hot sun. Within a year these horses will be relocated, the families given new jobs, and the carriages will be off the streets of Mumbai.

This is a huge step for the city in eliminating animal cruelty and listening to the voices of all the people who openly voiced their opinion about the carriages and their cost to the horses. Now these animals are going to get the right care and treatment for their hard work, and the workers will no longer have to live off their suffering. Thank those involved in ending this cruel practice.

Dear Chief Justice Shah and the Mumbai High Court,

Your decision to end the use of horse drawn carriages on the streets of your city is a highly commendable one and a great step in the right direction for cases on animal cruelty.

These horses have worked hard, suffered much, and deserve to get proper treatment and care after their life pulling carriages and living in city stables. Ensuring both their well-being and the well-being of the people who most likely had little other choice but to work with them shows great care and judgment on your part, and we hope the plan goes through smoothly for all involved and that these animals will get the life they deserve by next year.

Thank you for the consideration of these animals and for listening to those who spoke out against this cruelty–they will now get the chance to live their lives outside of the city in conditions suitable for a working horse.

Thank you. What about the fate of ponies who are treated horribly on the hill stations and tourist places in harsh weathers without proper medical care, food. I request you to tell the govt of uttrakhand, himachal pardesh and J&K and save them.
