Praise Ban of Foie Gras

Target: Governor of Sao Paulo Geraldo Alckmin

Goal: Praise the decision to ban the production and sale of foie gras in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Brazil’s largest city has passed legislation that will ban the sale and production of foie gras, an appetizer that is made from the fatty liver of force-fed ducks and geese.

Sao Paulo, Brazil, banned the delicacy over concerns of animal suffering during the making of foie gras. Foie gras is made by forcing a metal pipe down the throats of ducks and force-feeding them three times a day. This practice has been banned in many countries such as Switzerland, Italy, Argentina, and Israel. This horrible practice exists all so that the wealthy can eat the fatty liver of ducks in restaurants.

It is a relief that those in Sao Paolo’s government have recognized the unnecessary cruelty involved in making and selling foie gras. Sao Paolo City Councilman Laercio Benko said that “Foie gras is an appetizer for the wealthy. It does not benefit human health and to make it, the birds are submitted to a lot of suffering.” The restaurants in Sao Paolo have 45 days to prepare before the law goes into effect, otherwise they risk being fined.

The decision to ban foie gras in Sao Paolo was a fantastic move by those in their government. By banning the production and sale of foie gras, Sao Paolo is doing its part to reduce the suffering of animals for a simple delicacy eaten by the wealthy. Please thank the Governor of Sao Paolo for stopping this horrible treatment.

Dear Governor Geraldo Alckmin,

I am writing to you to thank you for supporting the decision to ban the sale and production of foie gras in Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paolo. The production of foie gras is horrible and only promotes animal cruelty.

To make foie gras, a metal tube is forced down the throats of ducks to force feed them three times a day. It is horrible that we allow this atrocious behavior to continue in other places, but Sao Paolo will no longer take part in this torture.

While restaurant owners and chefs may be displeased with this decision, it is crucial that Sao Paolo continues to take a stand against animal cruelty. Thank you for supporting the decision to stop the sale and production of foie gras in Sao Paolo and I hope that you continue to support animal rights issues in the future.
